Add to the memory you keep, remember when you fall asleep
hold to the love that you know
Cygnus didn't like going to town. There were reasons to go, of course. Sometimes Mace was needed around the house, sometimes it took talking shop with the butcher to keep the prices right. And sometimes he had a girl to see. But still, the masses of people irritated him, got under his skin, reminded him that he had no business being in such a poor, ignorant place. He didn't resent them for it; on the contrary, Cygnus understood that it was not the fault of those living in District Ten that they had little to no education. No, he knew exactly where to place the blame.
Which only made going to the market worse. He knew where the animals would go, the best parts of them, whose pockets the revenue lined. All of it sickened him. And yet, to see Marcelline, he would compromise on a few things.
The walk to town was long, and with the recent deluge of rains, even more unpleasant. He avoided the mud as best he could, since his shoes were worn and old without the added layer of grime, but it couldn't be helped entirely. He was damp to his knees before he'd even gotten halfway. The houses started to crowd in, the farms smaller and closer together, as he made the long journey to town.
He cursed Mace again for selling the horses, even though it had been the right choice economically. What he wouldn't give for any sort of transportation, other than this own two feet. He ought to be home, butchering and plotting. Cygnus whipped the sweat off his brow, focused on Marcelline, and followed the road around the bend.
He spotted a boy, about his age, whom he didn't recognize. This wasn't so unusual given that he had been born and raised at the northern community home, educated and isolated there. He straightened his shoulders, walked a little taller. When he came close enough, he nodded his head in a polite, if not particularly warm, gesture.
