It was the Monday after the Reaping and all over the televisions recaps for all the districts were playing; even in the backgrounds during class in and in the cafeteria during lunch. Wren and her pa went to the Reapings together and Wren had met up with some of her friends, including her newest friend, Tyler. They all held their breath together hoping not to get Reaped and luckily none of them had. Still, Wren felt bad for the twenty-four children who were going to endure horrors unimaginable and twenty-three of them were going to die. She didn't know the two from her district but still felt sincerely awful for them. On the positive side, they were all older than her, so there were no twelve, thirteen, or fourteen year olds in the Games.
Even though it was sad to see people being sent to their death, it was the norm in Panem and the citizens were desensitized by now. All they cared about was not having to say goodbye to the people they cared about. Wren didn't have any siblings but she was glad not to have her Reaped. As the names were called out, Wren couldn't help grabbing hold of Tyler's arm in anticipation. Subconsiously, he was the one she really didn't want to see be Reaped. Though they had only met the past Friday, they had hung out three days in a row and really clicked. She hadn't quite admitted it to herself yet, but she hoped there just might be something there between them.
They had agreed to eat lunch together today so here they sat at the table together eating. The television was turned up louder so all of Panem's children had to watch the Reapings. Luckily, it wasn't too loud to talk. Now they were showing the Reapings of District 8. Some girl probably fifteen or sixteen was on the stage with the Mayor. She looked white as a ghost and scared to death. She was extremely skinny and fragile looking but had a strong presence to her. Still, Wren thought she wouldn't make it far. The petite ones never did. It took a while after the name was called, but an older boy stepped up completely dishelved but he put on a brave face.
"Why do they think we have to watch this over and over again?" she asked. "You'd think once would be enough, right?"[/color] Wren was probably going to go to the Black Market after school just to go somewhere that didn't have a television. For her, it was worse to see the Reapings, Opening Ceremony, and Interview than the actual Games. Those things made her think about how they people were affected by this. It made it more real.
