Craig WielyI watch the world from a side of the moon
Looking at the stars, looking back to you
Just to see if your world's still alive
Looking at the sun with the fire in your eyes
He acts nearly double his age, a hard statement to fulfill at the age of twenty, but since his father left Craig has had to become the man of the house, and that meant growing up fast. Responsible and kind, this boy, no this man, of District nine takes care of his mother and is more of a gentleman than his father will ever be.It's hard to know where I stand
Even the man on the moon couldn't tell me where to land
But, I wanted to fly in the sea with no gravity to pull me down
SAILING ALL ALONE,
Craig isn't exactly the tall, dark and handsome stranger that captures the hearts of the heroine, but he is tall, dark, and some say he's handsome. Coming up to the total height of 6'1", he isn't the tallest man in his district, but he's far from the shortest. He's never actually been 'short', always being either the or one of the tallest in his class. With his black hair and marine-gray eyes, he may be shuffled under the category of 'pretty boy' but he doesn't consider himself all that good looking. He just happened to get a nice pair of eyes. They are his favorite things about himself, the rest he merely passes off as 'decent'. His shoulders are a little broader than most men, and extend into long semi-muscled arms with hands that are mostly palm. He has a nicely muscled torso, and he is strong enough to easily transport the shipments and packages that he deals with in his job as a courier between the factories and supply trains. His legs are long and sturdy, accounting for most of his height.
Often, he is found wearing a gray casual button-up shirt with embroidered designs on the right sleeve. He usually pushes the sleeves up his arm, past his elbow, exposing his arms to the open air. To cover his lower half, he wears slightly ripped jeans, which are now in style, according to those who knew something of fashion. If it's cold, or if he's going out at night, Craig will wear a black leather jacket. Some may question his choice of clothing, but he just wears what he's comfortable in, not really caring for being stylish. So tell me this one thing
Now listen to me close
You steal from me but you call it your own
You liar you thief go make your stand on your own two feet
THOUGHT I'D MADE IT HOME
Perhaps he could be one of the 'popular kids', but his personality denies him any chance. He's too shy, well shy might not be the right term, but he hates the spotlight. He would rather be part of the 'regular' group than any of the extremes. It's not stage-fright, he just doesn't see himself as anyone who should be special, nor seen as such. Despite his attempts to skirt attention, he is pretty well noticed among his peers. He turns heads when he walks past, catches smiles from many girls and has received a few waves even when he merely walks to the bakery. He is quiet and polite, more of an observer than a participant, avoiding interacting with others in exchange with taking information in through quiet analysis. However, he doesn't often have to put this skill into play, or he doesn't often have time to, since many people are willing to talk to him. It seems he appears to be the trustworthy type. He is, but only in the fact that if you tell him something he won't tell anyone else if you don't want him to. This is only because of his kind nature, and that he knows how much secrets cost people, for he has secrets of his own.
One thing Craig must never be mistaken for, is someone who manipulates others to get his way. He would never use any of the special attention people give him to his advantage, though he could do so quite easily. Most of what he gets is given to him, or rightly earned. Often, when people offer him things, he refuses. It just doesn't seem right to him, getting something even though he did nothing to deserve it. Perhaps he is being too prideful, but don't other people need that stuff more than he does? Craig could be called 'quiet', and he is but he can have loud opinions. Because of his high standing among his peers, he is often looked to as a leader or even made leader during group work. His doesn't see why everyone treats him like this, what had he ever done to warrant it?
Perhaps it is his giving personality that brought all of this attention to him, or perhaps it is something else entirely. But for either case, Craig did work, even minor work, because of the tight situation his family was in. He took the role of secondary supporter for the family. He was never that close to his father, but his relationship with his mother was deep. However, despite this strong loyalty to his mother, Craig is in no way a "momma's boy", his independence wouldn't allow it. He would often help her with her work, distributing the soaps she made or finding potential buyers. Many people had a tough time refusing a boy of thirteen as he asked them to try out some of his mother's soap. As soon as he was allowed to work in the factory near his house he applied for a job. The other employees can be heard talking about how dedicated he was to his work, and how efficiently he worked. There were rumors that he would be promoted once he was a little older, but he never listened to the rumors. He wasn't there to be promoted, he was there to help out his mother. So oh now oh now listen what your friends say
Go now go now go and do it that way
I'm the one you want to believe
But in your heart you can't see
BUT I THREW IT ALL AWAY
Even from a young age, Craig was independent. The only time he relied on his parents was when he had to eat, or to buy something he needed. Once he was old enough, he did small jobs around District 9. At times he would work for free, but often those he helped would give him something for his troubles. Sometimes he seemed to be providing more for the family than his father. He often wondered how his family would have done if he hadn't brought home his meager earnings. The biggest job he took, before beginning work in one of the factories, was when his mother had given him a package of home-made soap that she had made for the Mayor's wife. He delivered the package directly to the Mayor's wife, who paid him what would normally be a week's "wage". He had thanks her profusely, but she just passed it off. He had only expected a couple of coins, and her kindness gave him all the more determination to be able to support the family.
When he was seventeen, his parents divorced. His mother had offered him the chance to chose who he stayed with, but both Craig and his father knew the answer. The distance between them made it easy for Craig to stay with his mother, who had suspected the outcome from the beginning. After a swift good-bye, Craig never saw his father again, though he knew his mother was very torn by this. He later found evidence that his mother was seeing someone, and discovered that his mother and father were back together. Keeping this secret, Craig didn't let anyone in on the fact that he knew. It was easier if he pretended it wasn't happening, which was easy because he had his work to distract him.
Over the next few months, the idea of finding someone to start his own family with began to dawn in Craig's mind. He knew the way some girls looked at him, but he also knew how making a bad decision would cause pain to more than himself. He has kept this in mind, but he has also kept his eyes open. He had secretly been stowing small amounts of money away, for when he finally finds the right person, if he finds the right person. This thought mainly came up when his mother told him about how she was getting back together with his father. He wasn't surprised, but the idea of finding someone, like his parents had found one another, had lodged in his mind. Perhaps he would find that person soon, or perhaps not.Hold on it won't take long
You can find yourself when you decide to finally start
Don't look to me when you fall
