Brring, brring, brring! Finally, the bell rings, signaling the end of the schol day. As much as I hate the sound of that bell, it brings a sense of relief. I make a beeline for the door, attempting to avoid everyone, knowing that my attempts are useless. I know that Salem isn't going to just leave me alone once she sees me, no matter how much I pray that she will.
Just as I expected, Salem spots me almost right away, weaving through a crowd of students. She's practically grinning ear-to-ear, like always. Normally this would be comforting, but not today. It surprises me that she doesn't know this already.
"Hey, Dred," She says, grin still planted on her face, clearly oblivious to my bad mood.
"Hi. Listen, I really gotta get home. I'll catch up with you later." I attempt to turn and walk away, but she plants herself right in front of me. It's clear that she realizes that something's wrong now.
"Er, or we can catch up now. What's up? You've been down all day. I'm honestly starting to worry."
I'm completely baffled. She really doesn't even know? And she's supposedly my best friend?
"I shouldn't have to explain." I give her the evil-eye and push past her, making it outside. But, she follows me, of course.
"What the hell, Dred?" She's clearly steaming now, and I know that she's just trying to help, but I want to be alone right now.
"It's October twenty-third, Salem! Does that not ring a bell? What do you not understand?" I shout at her, and I notice that a few people have gathered around, no doubt wondering what all the commotion is about.
Before she can respond, a boy with shaggy black hair and emerald eyes comes and stands right in front of us. I vaguely recognize him.
"So," He begins. "Trouble in paradise, eh?" The ugly sneer on his face causes anger the surge through me.
"Get out of my way." My voice is pure venom. I purposefully shove him with my shoulder, momentarily throwing him off balance.
He regains his balance and grabs me by my shoulder, spinning me around to look him in the face. He's completely enraged, but I just don't care right now.
He grabs me by the collar of my shirt, and before I can even react, his fist connects with my nose. Pain shoots through my face as blood spouts from my nose. I look over at Salem, who is utterly shocked by the turn of events.
Blood still streaming down my face, I call out to her. "October twenty-third. The day that my father was murdered-by the Capitol. Not that you would care." I turn and walk away, not looking back. This time, nobody stops me.
