“Why not ask Amicia?”Fleet SeineI check my watch again as I stand at the dockside. I agreed to meet Amicia here for ten o’clock, and I’m ten minutes early. It doesn’t matter; I want to make the most of my three days off. Mondays to Thursdays I spend a long, dangerous shift on a trawler, bringing in fish for the Capitol and my district. It’s rewarding work; I love the cold spray on my face, the intensive labour and the challenge of holding on for dear life. Every day is an adventure, but today is Friday, time when the guys I hang out with are still in work. So I figured,
I laugh to myself, thinking of how strange the situation is. I am known for flirting, or at the very least eying up the ladies that pass me by – I hold my hands up to it. I’m a suck-up. But I still manage to get along well with some of the girls, especially Amicia. I can’t quite place it, though I suppose her sweet, loving personality draws me in. I might like girls who put up a fight, but her gentle nature is less common here in District 4.
And you feel sorry for her, don’t you? Fleet Two is speaking. I tell him to shut up, but he’s kinda right. I don’t pity Amicia, but I sympathise. I can’t remember my parents, and my childhood was fraught with the looming figure of my cousin, Harp, so although I have enough money coming in and I’m popular enough, I understand what it’s like to hurt inside. As far as I know, she’s pretty poor for our area, but if I can bring a smile to her face then that’s worth her weight in gold. Or my weight in gold, since she’s so light. My weight in gold would be plenty to buy what she needs.
I sit down on the edge of the docks, my legs dangling over the edge. The tide is out, the moon is rising above the water and I think it’s the perfect time to swim out to the reef. She likes swimming, I recall. A morning of swimming in the cool, clean ocean, then a quiet hour or two relaxing by ourselves. We all need it now and again. I sit tight and wait for Amacia to arrive, but I’m certain that she’ll be on time and not a second late.[/blockquote]
