Tonight was the night of the rebel meet-up. It wasn’t the official District Thirteen meeting, but more of the unofficial one. Jace was involved with a group of people that didn’t think District Thirteen was really trying to overthrow the Capitol. So, they had taken it into their own hands to start planning. Things had gone pretty smoothly so far. The recruiting process, however, was still very much under way.
She pulled the last strings on her boot tight and wound them into a knot. It was rather unfortunate that she had never learned how to properly tie her shoes when she was a child. And it seemed a little late to learn now. No one ever noticed anyway because her cargo pants usually covered almost the entirety of the boots. Tonight the pants were pants and had a lot more pockets than usual. Jace stood up and walked over to her dresser, her hands lingered on objects as she tried to figure out what to bring. Her fingers immediately went to her pocket knife, which she slid into her front right pocket so that it was be easily accessible. A small piece of wood that she had started to carve in went into her bottom left calf pocket on her pants. After a minute, she decided there was nothing else she needed for the night.
On her way out the door, she picked up her black jacket. One. Two. Three. Floor. Jumping down the stairs leading from her hall was a routine now. Jace threw the light jacket over her teal coloured tank top and zipped it almost to the top. She shoved her hands in her pockets the removed the fingerless gloves that were stuffed inside. The seventh floor sector was no longer very crowded because the alarm announcing that had set had gone off nearly three hours ago and no one really had an excuse to be out of their quarters this late. District Thirteen hadn’t had a curfew for years, but it seemed everyone still evacuated the sector at a certain time every night. The air was a bit chilly, but nothing Jace couldn’t handle. It had been a lot warmer in her room because she had had the heater on, but she was not going to protest.
Her fingers found their way into the gloves and she velcroed them shut. A little boy ran past and her heart lurched in her chests. He’d be six by now. Seven in five months’ time. The memories never left her, as much as she tried to force them back. They were still there as fresh as they’d been when it had happened. Sometimes she wondered what had happened to Wyatt, but then she remembered that she didn’t care. Jace hoped he was dead. She pulled her hood over her head. Her hair had been thrown into a messy bun. Looks didn’t really matter to her because there was no one in this district to impress. Jace didn’t even think she owned any makeup.
The sector was so empty that she could hear her own footsteps echo. She took a sharp right turn because there was a short cut she knew that wasn’t taken often. The lights were on just like they always were, but they were dimmer in this part of the sector. And if she kept going there were a few parts where there was barely any light at all. The district electricians hadn’t yet gotten to fixing it, and while it wasn’t usual for anyone, the rebels thought it a glorious meeting place. Jace pulled her hood farther over her face in an attempt to almost hide her face completely in the brightness of the area so that see wouldn’t be seen.
The brunette took a sharp left. Here the lights were even darker. She was only about five minutes away from her destination. To her right she thought she saw a figure, so she stopped a moment. Seconds ticked by but there wasn’t any more moment. Jace considered calling out but then she thought better of it. No use drawing attention to yourself. She took a step forward and started walking again. A voice cut through the silence and she stopped in her tracks. There had been someone there. Jace thought it would be better to deal with the situation now, so that she wouldn’t be bothering. Air entered her lungs as she took a deep breath and spun around, making sure her hood still covered a good part of her face. She tried to make her voice lower in case whoever it was knew her. “Come again?”
