Learning how to knife fight (just for fun)

Kaleb walked carefully behind the black haired girl, noting how distracted she was looking up at the sky. A small smile crept onto his face. Not many people dared to carry a knife around with them anywhere in Panem, but since this girl was, surely it meant she was looking for some practice.

“You should really be careful with that,” Kaleb said as he walked around the girl, keeping a safe distance in case she was jumpy. He stopped and turned toward her, a few yards ahead and pulled out his own knife from his pocket. It was a beautiful Peacekeeper knife, which had belonged to his father. The blade was black with a leather handle and serrated near the handle, common around District 7 where sawing wood was a part of daily life. He held the knife lightly, waving it at the girl like a parent would point their finger while scolding a child. “Knives are dangerous things.” Kaleb smiled, meaning for taunt to be more playful then anything.

That was when he recognized the girl. He didn’t know her personally, but he’d seen her around District 7 and occasionally in the woods when he was running messages and she was with some relative. What was her name? Cypress? Something like that. Kaleb backed down now, letting his knife lower to his side. It was stupid of him to make such arrogant comments before looking to see who he was talking to. Kaleb looked her up and down. If she’s out here with a knife, she must be nervous for the reaping soon, Kaleb realized. Shouldn’t he be too though? He’s seventeen, and with all the tessera he uses, he could be in the Games too. “I mean, I could always use some work too. Wanna spar?”

"Hello," Cypress greets the newcomer in a friendly tone. "I'm Cypress. Yes, you're right." She admits. "I'm not used to this at all." She states in a self effacing way.
"I want my father and brother to let me join them in the lumber mill soon though; and I thought that being able to handle a blade could equate to being able to handle an axe.

I'd be glad to spar with you; but I assure you I won't hurt you. I'd be more likely to hurt myself."
She grins ruefully.

"Ariel," Cypress greets the other girl in a friendly manner, feeling a bit guilty for the harsh words earlier. "- yes, please do join us."

OOC: You and me, both!

Ariel flashed one last smile at the duo before whipping her hand into the sheath of knives that was permanently attached to her hip. The sharpest knife greeted her and she tossed it neatly through the air toward Kaleb. Ariel smiled.

As Cypress is processing the question on technique; the knives are already flying. Ariel starts off the fight and Cypress is quick to attack the initiatory. The arena wasn't fair, after all!

She lunges forward with her borrowed knife towards Ariel.

Not surprising to to newcomer to the blade, Cypress misses Ariel.

Kaleb pauses as Cypress rushes at Ariel, clutching his leg. Looking on at the two fight, he examines his wound. Even as the two girls were going at each other, he was the one with the worst injury. Though it felt fine, he wasn't sure how long his mobility would last. Then that left the question, who should he attack? Ariel was the most experienced from what he gathered, so she would be able to take the most hits or block enough of them. Besides, two on one against a girl who admitted she didn't know what she was doing seemed against his code of honor.

Kaleb nodded, took up his Peacekeeper knife and moved as quickly as he could at Ariel, watching to make sure he wasn't overwhelming her. Everyone is fiercer in stressful situations, especially a two-on-one knife sparring. Kaleb quickly took a slash at Ariel.

Kaleb quickly brought his free hand up to his chest. Damn it, so much for worrying about Ariel. He had nearly the same sized wound now, plus the gash on his thigh. Kaleb still managed to smile at Cypress. "The names Kaleb. And who says your no good at this?"Kaleb nodded down to his bloody shirt, trying to play it off as nothing. "So come on, let's see how you handle close range."

Jumping to the side onto his good leg, Kaleb quickly lunged towards Cypress, swiping at her as he moved, hoping to get some hit before he got too weak. Another deep gash would put him out of commision for a while.

Kaleb stepped back, gripping his arm. Now he was cursing to himself. How could this be that he was taking all these hits? Were his wounds really getting to him that bad? Glancing back up, he knew there was no choice, he would simply just have to keep going. He switched his knife to his left hand, blood covering the handle.

He took a hesitant step forward towards Cypress, ducked right and sprung forward at the girl, slashing as he moved. If she blocked this one again, Kaleb worried she'd finish him way too quick.

Kaleb felt himself stagger back, another attack failed. He could feel himself running low on energy, the blood draining from him too fast. His heart beat quickened, and he sucked in a deep breath.
