Where is it? Where is today's find? Gallagher peeped into a tree hollow towards the top of a towering oak, craning his neck backward so as to not disturb his perch; scored, calloused hands gripped a rounded nub of bark to the right of the hollow, black canvas clad feet shifted slightly on a branch a few feet lower and to the left. Unlike in town, where he would be running errands for his family that would consist of stammered responses to merchants and a general avoidance of other students from school, Gallagher was in his element. There were no other people around. Just a tree to climb.
Unfortunately, it was just a tree to climb without any squirrels in it. Not to mention no squirrels that were the least bit more friendly than the norm, which was what Gallagher was looking for. He had the idea of breeding squirrels into a domesticated form to serve as pets for the wealthier citizens of District 5 as well as Capitolites, if they would buy them. Of course they'll buy them, they'll buy anything new and eye-catching. They only need to find a way to feed them. I'm sure those from our district wouldn't mind letting their squirrels out to feed themselves, but Capitolites might be a little more fussy. Breeding them to take food inside would take a few more generations, but it could be worth the wait. Unlike his spoken communication, Gallagher's train of thought was active and responsive, quick to jump in any direction at a second's notice.
Gallagher spotted some motion on a branch on the far left of the tree hollow, too far around the tree for him to make out what it was. Swiftly, he swung his left arm out between his body and the tree trunk to grab a branch in toward what was hopefully a squirrel; his left foot came off of the branch it was placed on and he planted it against the trunk of the tree, his right holding the weight. Now he just had to swivel his hips to left and jerk his right arm onto his new hand purchase. He started the motion...
...And his right foot fell out from beneath him. His legs scrambled to find and sort of toehold when the branch he was holding onto broke with a loud snap. He then fell a few feet knocking into the bases of other snapped branches, still clutching his ill-fated handhold, until his momentum was stopped by two thicker outgrowths. He could hear the slightly spaced thuds when one hit his rear and the other his right elbow a second later. Gallagher tensed his legs and right arm after a minute of allowing himself to rest and nothing seemed broken, only bruised, which would show clearly on his pale skin. From a sitting position, he took his bearings. Okay, so there is a branch maybe in arms reach if I can get to my feet, and from there is shouldn't be too difficult to make my way to the ground. Which is about fifteen feet down. It might be easier to jump, but what if I hurt myself? I would need someone to help me get back to town, and that would only be a disaster. Anyone from class would get a kick out of me injured, and would probably help themselves to an extra kick or two. Then again, it doesn't seem like anyone from class would be out here, they're mostly oil folk. Well, it's worth a shot.
"An-" Gallagher's voice barely came out, a frequent trouble of his. He cleared his throat and tried again. "Anyone out there?" he yelled as best he could. Now he would give any potential people out there a few minutes before he decided his course of action.
