It was itchy, again. The doctors told her that eventually, the burning itch that throbbed in her non-exsistant arm would dissapear, but so far it showed no signs of doing anything of the sort. On the contrary, the persistent itch that plagues her phantom limb seemed to be getting worse.

It was a little like when you get an itch on your nose when you know you can't scratch it. Only this time, there was no way to itch it- there's no way to touch somewhere that isn't even there any more. She suspected that most of the burning feeling was because her subconscious mind refused to accept the fact that the arm wasn't there. Unfortunately, her conscious mind was all too familiar with this.

The ocean looked so inviting from the jetty. The last bedraggled ships were drifting across the horizon as the sun set. Iosanna's father's sailing boat would be out there somewhere, too. It was only six months ago that she would swim out to meet him at this time, as part of her fitness routine. The loss of her arm meant that she no longer found it possible to swim a stroke, much less a couple of kilometers. Still, she hadn't got out of the habit of watching the sun set over the ocean. It made her thoughts drift away, and made her forget for a little while that the accident had still happened, made her still think she had two arms, made her think she was normal. And, even if it was just for a few seconds, that escape from reality was beautiful.

THEA.

Yeah. I'm pretty used to calling myself Chloe by now, it's so easy that I've begun to forget what its like for someone to call me Thea. So when a young girl with tears all over her goddamn awful-pretty face ran up to me and yelled my name before slapping me upside the cheek, it was more the shock of being Thea than the shock of being hit that got to me. I'm Thea. I am.

But while the girl was storming off, I caught spat-out words tumbling out of her fat lips. She was talking about some boy who I'd briefly liked, kindled a romance with, and damned all in one week. My stupid-idiot of a fool brotha! she'd screeched. And even being stunned silly, and not very intelligent to start with, I'd comprehended that when she said "brotha" she didn't mean her bro who she's really tight with. She meant her true, thick-and-thin-there-for-you, blood-sharing brother. I stumbled away, wondering exactly what had just happened to me, to Thea, and to Chloe, and whether or not we are all the same person, or perhaps..

Nothing. I walked away, whoever I am, and found some spare change in one of my pockets, it was just enough to buy a hand-rolled smoking gun I could stick between my teeth and inhale. Stress in this degree always brought me to the water front, since before I begun to doubt who exactly "I" am. Cigarettes are a newly acquired way to cope, but they work just as well. Standing alone, up against the ocean with a District behind it me. It's what calms me.

What doesn't, is a stranger invading my space. Although staring at her all the longer, and letting a sunset pass to my side, I can hardly say a word to her.

She's a cripple.
