Fledger RellsForced into a tiny rom to say goodbye forever. Choosing words carefully, not wanting to hurt or be hurt. Not wanting to be the victim. That will come soon enough. Fledger was still trying to comprehend all that had happened. He wouldn't be going home tonight, wouldn't sleep in his bed ever again. He'd never wrap his arms around River's body as they fell asleep, he'd never wake up in the middle of the night to hear his beautiful baby crying for him. His brain hadn't yet figured out what Reaping entailed. He knew, of course, but he still couldn't imagine himself doing those things. Going to the Capitol, training, killling people...The visits in this cold dark room were a welcome distraction.
Theron had come first. His eyes had been red, like he'd been crying. Fledger hadn't seen him cry in ages, not since their father had died. It was strange to think that he was the cause of those tears. They'd talked in those few minutes more than they had in the past few months. Fledger had told him to take care of River and Brooke, and Theron had clung to Fledger's sleeves, hating himself for not volunteering. "It's me that should be sitting there," Theron had said. "I don't have anything to lose. Not like you." But Fledger had told him, over and over, that it was okay. He had to be strong, take care of the family until he came home. Even if he didn't entirely believe that truth.
Now he sat, head in his hands, wondering what he'd say to River. Wondering how he could possibly say in words all that she meant to him. He couldn't let her go. Not her, not Brooke. His two beautiful girls. He'd die for them, if he had to. More importantly, he'd kill for them. He didn't want to, but he would. He'd try to get back to them, even if that was an impossible thing. It was all anyone could ask of him.
