Ebba Anne Zercha
District Four
Ginger hair surrounded her, suspended by the near freezing cold sea water. It made her seem tiny; so much hair for such a small person. From afar, it might look like the sea was aflame, a fire brand in the night, as her mother had once called her.
Pale skin seemed even more pale as the temperature of the water began to take a toll on her, her lips going a shade of blue and her body shivering. She began to shakily swim ashore, but being so far out in the ocean made it difficult. She had swum so far in the first place because it had been calmer and more secluded, but now the distance seemed like a burden rather than a blessing.
Shivering her way onto the shore, she sat on the sand, soaking up the warmth from the sun heated spot of sand close to where the smallest bits of the waves ended up. The water lapped at her feet, before returning back into the ocean, to be churned up as a wave again. Ebba watched, mystified, for what seemed like an eternity, a grin spreading across her face the longer she watched it. Having lived in District Four all of her life, she, like most other citizens, loved and had an affinity for the water. Swimming was her strong point, water calming her nerves when nothing else could.
She was still jittery, even though the water lapping at her had calmed her a lot. She still couldn’t shake the fear and worry she always felt in the weeks before and after a Reaping. She’d always been thankful that neither she nor her twin had ever been chosen as tributes for a Hunger Games, and hoped never to have to be put in that position, but with her getting older and her family poorer, she knew the chances of being Reaped for both teenagers were getting bigger by the day. She was ill for two weeks before the Reaping, fretting and worrying, though hiding it with humour and teasing so as not to worry Tidus or her uncle. She knew her attempts to cover up her fear were not working, but it made her feel better to pretend that they did. Even now, after the Reaping had taken place and the hunger games begun, she still felt fear, still shook and jumped whenever her name was called, still gulped whenever the Games were mentioned. The jitters would probably last for another week before she calmed down and went back to her normal self. For now, she’d just have to suffer, pretending nothing was wrong until she was out of her mire.
Looking back into the ocean water, she stood up, dusting the sand off of her body. Her sea blue-green eyes scanned the ocean for other people, but she only saw boats in the distance and heard the noise of the District Four people behind her. She was warm enough to back in for another swim now. She hated having to get out of the water, her own brother even suggested that she build a house in the ocean and lived there, as that was where she was happiest. Taking a few cautious steps into the cold water, she waded in until she was waist deep, and just stood there for a while, engulfed in her thoughts and her now very curly red hair.
((I'm sorry this post is short, I'm babysitting my sister's dog and he's a pain, so it's hard to type but I probably wouldn't have posted it till tomorrow otherwise.))
