MONA LAREN PICKETT

I walk out of the meeting building and trek carefully down the pathway to the square. I needed to be careful to avoid Peacekeeper Vliet, for she hates me more than anything. I pass Alexander, who is just coming back from tricking some peacekeeper and we nod to eachother. I pass Felicity as well, and she smiles as I pass her. She must be coming back from a delivery.

My plan is to leed Peacekeeper von Vliet away from the building, as she was spotted nearby last night. I sneak around quietly, and arrive at the square. When I het there, Ms.Faeroe is already selling some fruits. She smiles at me, and I smile back, but continue to search the crowd for my enemy. Ms.Faeroe must know what I'm doing, because she slips me something squishy.

I've got an idea. I climb on top of a small shop and wait above. I am careful not to slide off, for that would scare me half to death. Then, I see her aproach. Peacekeeper von Vliet looks around, and heads my way. I postion myself to let the fruit go as a distraction, when my leg gets in the way and I waste time regaining position.

She passes, but the fruit still drops. I lean over to see who it lands on, and all I see is the top of a head. The orange fruit lands on black hair, and I see a han dreah up to it, then look at me. I scramble around, and end up slipping in the process. "Ayek!" I screech, and come tumbling down.

I stroll out of my house going no where in general while I zip up my sweatshirt and tuck my hands in my pockets whistling a made up melody. Just as I’m reaching the main area of town, the crowd begins to thicken and I stay near the edge on the way to the store for my mother.

Just as I am about to enter a store to pick up the first items on my list I look up just as a slime covered something hits me in the forehead. Furious I look up to see a small girl on top of the shop. Why you little! I groan shaking the slime out of my hair and face. What do you think you are doing? I reach up grabbing the little girl by the ankle pulling her down and catching her in my arms. Setting her down ruffly I grab her by the arm, That better not have been ment for me!

Noticing the peacekeeper roaming the crowd appearing in ear shot, I say No Sis, we have to go shopping for mom and watch the peacekeeper contently walk away. What have you to say for yourself? I redirect my attention to the girl.

My heart is pounding when he grabs me and sets me down. I look around frantically hoping Peacekeeper Vliet didn't notice me. "No Sis, we have to go shopping for mom." He says, and I'm confused. Then I catch on and don't say a word. Vliet leaves and then he looks me fiercly in the eye. I'm scared to the bone.

"What have you to say for yourself?" He growls at me, and I suddenly feel so much smaller. "I-I-I didn't mean to..." I begin, and look down. "I was...aiming for someone else." I can't tell him what I was actually doing, even if I did accidently mess him up. I shuffle my feet and look back up. The fruit has left little orange lines streaking down his face.

I look around and see Ms.Faeroe is busy selling something, so I can't get her to help me. The crowd is thick anyway, and it was by chance I caught a glimpse of her. I look back at him. "I'm sorry." I say, and back up a few paces.

I see the fear in the girls eyes as she frantically looks about for help. I sigh feeling liquid run down my face. I allow the girl to back up a few steps and catch her breath. I listen to her rattle off excuses and I remain stern not yet convinced by the girls act.

“I’m sorry” the litte girl finally says. Content with the apology I reply It’s alright darlin’, and sorry I didn’t mean to scare you, what were you trying to do anyway?

I think back to my childhood and all the mistakes and consequences I had to suffer through. Smiling in spite of myself I remember all the times I didn’t suffer, blaming my mistakes on others was my specialty. I specifically remember the time I was trying to knock my teacher in the water, I had a ridiculous plan extremely unlikely to work… To my surprise it did work. The scolding was a blur and was unfortunate, the plan was rather brilliant.

When he asks me what I was doing I immediatly kick back into my usual way. I go over the list of things my parents told me to do if this situation ever happened. I contemplate if I should tell him or not. A little smile flickers across his face, and I continue to stare at him.

I rub my arms for warmth and open my mouth to speak. It takes a bit of moving my lips before the words actually begin to form. They to me easily, I may not be a proffesional liar like Alexander, but he;s taught me a few tricks. The strange thing is though, it's not lies I'm saying.

"I was trying to distract Vliet, uh, I mean, Peacekeeper Vliet. For my friends." I say, as the group I was in, even with people aging all the way up to 79, were all my friends. Except 1 I guess.

“I was trying to distract Vilet, uh I mean, Peacekeeper Vilet. For my friends.” I listen to the little girl tell me, I’m immensely perplexed as I’m not sure why a group of little kids would need to be distracting Peacekeeper Vilet.

All right, I’m interested what does an innocent looking little girl doing distracting a peacekeeper? I remember back to why I came to town in the first place, I really need to begin picking up some groceries.

I put my hands in my pockets and fiddle with the list of items I’m supposed to pick up. What is your name again? I’m Micah. I add waiting for the girl’s response.

I remember being young, what happened to my childhood, I feel like I was learning how to swim yesterday I look down with a small amount of jealousy and sigh.

"I never told you my name," I say, "It's Mona." I sway on my feet a few times. "I'm supposed to distract her, it's my job." I look around for Alexander, he's always smooth with lies. Or William, he doesn't lie well but he certainly knows how to get people out of messes. Should I tell him more, or stop here? I roll things over in my head on how to maybe get out of here without running off, where he'd most definently take notice of it.

I look around some more, but don't see any inspiration. I swipe a fly from my field of vision and study him. Then, since there really is nothing to do, I do what I'm best at. "What are you doing here?"
