The thief stood poised at the edge of the square, carefully scanning targets in the crowd. He spotted his first mark, a rich looking lackey of the mayor. He had stolen from this man before, and the lackey had managed to discover the identity of Nick’s associate that had helped him plan the job. It was time for payback. Nick started toward the man, slowly crossing the square, keeping his head down yet looking up enough to spy any peacekeepers. He moved quickly, yet not fast enough to arouse suspicion. It was the gait of someone with a mission, someone trying to get out of the sun and back to their house. The man rounded a corner, heading into an alleyway. It was the perfect location for an ambush. Nick was probably thinking too far into this, but it was never bad to be cautious. The law was always after the band of thieves that plagued the District. Nick walked past the alleyway, looking to make sure the coast was clear on the first sweep. He turned around, and then walked down the alley. The man stood there with his back turned to Nicholas, as if he was waiting for him. So Nick did what any coward would do in this situation: He ran as fast as he could away from the alleyway, trying to put as much distance between himself and the square as possible.
He reached the slummier area of the district without incident, and then decided that he would need to at least bring home some stolen goods, so he headed for the shop district. He spotted a target quickly; a girl around his age, who seemed to be a bit shorter than he was. She had strawberry blond hair, and it glowed in the sunlight. She looked actually fairly pretty. Nick thought that it was quite a shame that he would have to rob her. Maybe later he could talk to her and not steal her money. He walked slowly towards her, and then reached into his pocket. Nick grabbed his pocketknife, slowly flicking the blade open. It was a good blade, and had served him well every time he needed to slash open a purse, or cut a piece of food. He walked past her, and as he did, slashed open her purse, reaching his hand under to grab any change that fell out. A few coins fell into Nick’s hand, softly rattling against the flesh, but not loud enough for anyone to suspect anything. Then a coin fell to the street, loudly signaling that the girl had been robbed. “Dammit,” Nick muttered, and then began to push his way through the crowd, trying to escape.
