A Moment, A Love, A Dream, Aloud...
It had been a lovely party, to say the least. The entire Ryder family was on their way home, exhaustion read across each of their lovely faces. Claire, the youngest of the six, was already nestled in their father's arms sound asleep; it had been a long night for the three year old.
Adina and Jacob both held Clara's glove covered hands. The evening light began fading as they walked home in the snow, and everyone was bundled up to brace against the winter chill. Mason and William both accompanied their mother near the lead where their father and Claire held point position. Noah was always the leader of the family, and no one objected; they adored their father dearly.
The hem of Clara's dress hit against her knees with each step she took; the purple garment hidden by her long black coat. White stockings covered her slender legs and on her feet black ankle boots trudged though the snow. I probably should have worn pants. Despite her thoughts she knew well enough that when it came to parties, she was always required to look her best. She did so to please her father.
Noah's notable position in district seven, allowed the Ryder family to be invited to many of the high-end festivities his co-workers and friends held. It was always a pleasure for the large family to make an appearance, and the children did enjoy the spectacle. Clara had done this for eighteen years, and yet did not tire of it. The chance to dress up and make her family proud by being the loveliest guest at each of the festivities did bring joy to the blue-eyed beauty. Plus, her mind playfully added, who would watch all of the kids? Clara always made sure her siblings were on their best behavior, but it was never an issue. The were raised to be proper and well mannered.
As the sky darkened there was an all around chorus of sighs once the family made it home. The evergreen house lay invisible in the clearing up ahead, but every Ryder knew that they had made it back. Instantly Jacob and Adina let go of Clara's hands and ran up the porch steps in an attempt to be the first ones in bed. Clara didn't blame them, it was horrendously late. While she followed the rest of her family she could have sworn she saw something in the trees behind her house. Don't worry, her mind reassured her, it's just the light messing with your eyes.
Continuing to the porch steps she saw something move for the second time. That is definitely not the light messing with my mind. All of her instincts told her to go investigate, but she needed a reason to go around behind her house. Think, Clara, think. "Excuse me father," she kept her voice even so as not to startle either of her parents. "I could have sworn I heard Adina's bunnies making a fuss in their cages behind the house. May I go and calm them down? I wouldn't mind." The angel knew it was a great way to get their permisson, and once both of her parents had given her a nod of approval she was off.
The woods took on a sinister look as she walked the perimeter of her home on her own. She laced her fingers together in front of herself and had them rest on her jet black coat. Once behind the house she could see that the bunnies were sound asleep, just as she had assumed they would be. The pale-faced beauty continued into the mess of trees hoping to reassure herself that nothing was out there.
"Hello?" Her bell-like voice broke the night's silence and she hoped that no response would come, or else she would scream for Mason.
She was wrong.
