When you walked in, a tiny bell at the top of the door would go off so that everyone in the store was alerted that another person had just entered the facility. The first thing everyone noticed was the shelves. Rows upon rows of shelves stocked with various household items and necessities. Some of it was more expensive than others. Those were all lined on the right side of the store. The shelves had more luxurious items than Keegan or his mother had ever been able to afford. As he walked inside, the cool air brushed against his skin. It was a welcomed feeling rather than the humid temperature that lingered outside.
The coins in his pocket jingled as he meandered down the aisle at the far right. They were all that was left of this week’s spending. Last Monday he had come home to find the money lying next to a note on the table:The chicken last night was burned. Try leaving it in for only 20 minutes next time. Buy whatever we need. I’d like fresh bread.-Constance
His mother’s note felt just as cold then as it did now. She didn’t even bother referring to herself as his mother anymore. Now it was just: -Constance. At first it had been Love, Mom and then Mom and now just –Constance. Keegan couldn’t even remember what she looked like. It had been almost a full year since he had seen his mother. They lived in the house but they had somehow mastered the art of avoiding each other completely. He had never understood what he had done to make her hate him so much.
Keegan took a sharp right into the next aisle. Bread, bread, bread, bread... “Here we go.” The words were too low for anyone else to hear. He grabbed the first pack on his shelf. The bread was almost as much money as he had because he had chosen to buy it here instead of at the bakery. The bakery was the one building he would avoid at all costs. The bell went off signaling that someone else had entered the story, but Keegan remained in his thoughts. What else did I need to get?
