Apples to Apples

A few apples fell from a tree and into a basket on the ground, followed by a smiling young man who landed beside the basket. Ny-om stuffed the small knife into his boot and picked up the basket. He was working, if you hadn't figured that one out, and it was about midday. A bead of sweat ran down his forehead, and he reached up and wiped it off. As he came to the next tree in the long line, he gentlyset the basket down and began climbing again.
A few minutes later, a baker's dozen of plump red apples fell neatly into the basket. Ny-om hopped down and picked up the basket again, obviously having a bit of trouble with the increased weight.I'll be heading back for a new basket soon. The small fifteen year old boy got two apples from another tree before returning to the front of the orchard to drop off his basket of apples and recieve an empty one. Obviously, he couldn't carry as many apples as some so each of his loads were smaller then the other workers', but he could work fast enough so that he could meet the quota, if not exceed it.
Not many people really enjoyed doing this type of work because they believed more of this food should be given to District Eleven, but Ny-om disagreed. He hated the Capitol as much as the next guy, but he believed it was completely fair that his district share the food. Then again, a lot of these apples went to the Capitol itself, but...it was nice to know at least a few Districts were being helped. A few families could be well fed because of his work, and he liked that.
As the day labored on into the afternoon, Ny-om was still working alone. He had passed a few other workers, but none had stopped to talk to him. Well, none had stopped to talkyet anyway...
