Zephyr stared out beyond the gate that surrounded District 9 as the smoke billowing from the factories floated off and hovered over the forest beyond. It was a cloudy day, but refreshingly no smog, so Zephyr was able to stand near the electrified fence and actually see out into the tree line. He swore he saw shadows move just out of sight, but then again, it could just be his imagination. All the stories of hunting his parents have told him just messing with his mind.
Of course, he didn't look too long. That would just be begging the peacekeepers to come over and question him. He wasn't doing anything wrong, but looking out beyond District 9 in longing wasn't the smartest thing to do. 'Why would anyone want to leave their district?' They would ask, and Zephyr would come up with some lame excuse, like he was having an episode or something. Most peacekeepers left him alone after that. So Zephyr continued along the road through the district, glancing over at the woods every few seconds, keeping his head down.
Why did he want to see what was out there? He knew things would kill him if he left the district unprepared, or the peacekeepers would whip him if he got caught coming back in. What was it though that made him want to explore? His life was fine here. Maybe. He knew a lot of kids at school that had it much worse than him. Why wasn't he content? He didn't want to leave the district. Wanderers were just dead people walking as far as he was concerned. But that didn't make his desire to see the forest any less prominent in his mind.
Zephyr stopped and sat down along the side of the road. His foot was twitching uncontrollably and couldn't walk any further until it stopped. He grabbed his foot and glanced around, hoping no one would notice. He already felt so vulnerable, he didn't need another person looking down on him. "I'm strong enough. I don't have to let this control me." Zephyr whispered to himself, half believing it. He stood, trying to gain his balance. For a few seconds, he was able to hold his own, and stepped forward onto the road. His foot twitched as he set his foot down, twisting his ankle and falling into the dirt. "Crap." Zephyr moaned pushing himself up, glancing at the woods beyond the district. "This is exactly what would happen out there, and then you'd be dead." Zeph told himself, but surprisingly he didn't believe himself. He stood, brushed the dust off his clothes and stepped toward the the electrified fence, hoping his episode had ended.
