The Anthem — Day 8

The ever-shifting mass sand beneath your feet seems to grow still all of a sudden, as the torrent of granules raining down from above momentarily ceases. The Capitol seal takes its place along with a loud swell of familiar music that you recognize as the anthem. The notes sound slightly flat, as if something is bending the pitch, and it manages to make the haughty tune sounds as if it is ridiculing you even more than usual.

The melody finishes, and the seal is replaced by the faces of the dead:

It only takes two of your fingers to tally up the dead, and the subtraction is simple enough that even your tired brain realizes that there are just tributes left in the arena including yourself — you've reached the final two, so only one more life has to be ended if you're to make it home. You're so close to victory you can practically feel it, but beware, tribute: this isn't a time to get overconfident.

The music stops and the projection fades, throwing the Arena into darkness once more. The sand level continues climbing until all three towers are completely covered, leaving you standing in an ever-shrinking desert. There's nowhere to hide now...
