Name: Romelie Patricia Kylla Rhodes
Age: 19
Gender: Female
District: District 2If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
Appearance
Romelie’s ripe peach-coloured hair accentuates her pale skin, which comes down her family from years inside the Nut, and is cut by her own hand, messily, to her shoulder. Her inquisitive face immediately draws people, with hazel eyes alight with interest and a constant mischievous look. However, what differentiates her from the rest of her family is the fresh blush in her cheeks, acquired from time in the meadows skirting District Two, where she spends her time avoiding work and finding much more interesting things to do.
Looking more closely at Romelie's face, though, her details are not as to-die-for as her overall appeal. Scowl lines are slowly appearing around her eyes and mouth, and a haunted look of guilt and fear always glows dully in her otherwise lively eyes. As well as this, Romelie sneers more than she smiles, a signature expression of any District Two child who was bred to be arrogant and come out on top, rather than modest and be the underdog. The other thing that distances Romelie from people, and that only her dearest friends could disregard, are the bruises around her temple, given to her by her otherwise composed and cunning mother, in the many fights they have. Even as an adult, Romelie can't deny that she fears her mother almost as much as she hates her father for these tiny shows of panic behind Lesley's loving and vulnerable mask.
Standing at 5’6”, Romelie had always made the perfect height for a tribute. And, being from a Career District, that is what she always trained to be. Her arms and legs are lightly muscled and you could sharpen swords on her stomach. While she is not conceited, she often wears clothes that show off her desirable fitness, tops issued by the trainers for streamlining and cargo shorts that just brush her knee. While her friends often told her she looked most beautiful at the reaping, there’d never be another occasion where you’d catch Romelie in a dress. In fact, the most girlish things about her is the multiple piercings that line her ears, given to her by the other Tribute-aspiring children in a fit of tough-guy gang craziness, and her obsession with flowers. Such is the colour of her hair, and the compliment it makes with her skin and eyes, that it is forever dotted with brightly colour petals and blossoms. Romelie’s mother told her this is a blessing, and Romelie never feels self-conscious about her ability to stand out. She wears her unique flowers with pride.
But if I am only for myself, what am I?
Personality
On the whole, Romelie has a lot of friends. Her tough streak of determination to succeed meant that she made her way to the top of the social hierarchy quickly. However, Romelie tends to only stay around the same few people. As a career, she learnt to be acquainted with many and trust only a few. She still keeps that mantra even in the next stage of her life, and only the gang she has trained with since she was little more than a toddler with a sling are her real friends. She knows all their strengths and weaknesses, and that would make it easy to overcome them if it came to fighting. Which it won’t.
Another thing that stems straight from her six years as potential Arena-bait is her view on death. Romelie has often found herself wishing death upon those she hates and, more often than not, envisioning herself torturing her Father. She would never dream of sharing these things, she would surely be shunned from the people surrounding her family as she had been shunned from them directly, and the last thing Romelie needed was another dent on her already damaged reputation, the proud creature that she is. The predatorial District 2 instinct that lives within her means that she would not feel bad about killing someone who deserved it, in the arena or out.
Despite this, what she fears above all is her own death. A killing machine such as she is is programmed to defend, but never to die. Perhaps that's what lead her to avoid the Games when she should have willingly volunteered as the brave face of their District. Perhaps that's why she is so afraid to trust anyone whose weaknesses she doesn't already know. Such are the recesses of Romelie's mind that even she doesn't know why her fears always seem so real, and so imminent.
Romelie, like all troubled youths, lives by a mantra that affects how she acts. She is not totally independent, though constantly sees how a situation will affect her as well as others, acting accordingly. Being part of a 'pack' is important to her, but she has selfish impulses as well. However, she has trained her dark thoughts to her advantage, and her disciplined mind means she constantly comes out on top. While not always the most likeable person in the world, Romelie proves to be useful to others and a good addition to any team.
And if not now, when?
History
Romelie's mother had always been a victim of desire. Coming from a low-thought of family, she never thought she'd ever have a good reputation, or climb high in the social pyramid of District 2. Nevertheless, she was power hungry and always aspired to have more than she got. Her first husband, a low ranking official in the Peacekeeper training units of the District, died tragically from a random explosion in his sector of the unit, so young that no Last Testament was written. As a result, his widow was awarded a medal of Honour for her grief, and acquired his funds and treasures from years of well-paid work. Strangely, Lesley Rhodes remarried quite quickly, to a vice commander of Military Strategy inside the ‘Nut’. He too died swiftly, for inexplicable reasons, as his body was never found. Rumours started about Lesley, why did all the bad things happen to her? And why did she benefit so quickly from them? Suspicions arose, but by this time the twice-widowed woman was living in District-standard luxury with enough money to disregard the whispers about her, and even to pay people who started looking in the right places, or making enquiries into these sudden, terrible deaths.
When Romelie’s mother married Archer Solstice, she thought she’d struck gold. Archer, being on the council, had power that she wanted. Quickly, Lesley was pregnant; though this was not what she wanted. Although another mysterious death might tip the scales and send her straight to the Capitol for execution for serial killings and rebel thought patterns, because murdering military figures could only be counted as high treason, a child was definitely the sort of burden Lesley knew how to handle. However, Romelie Patricia Solstice came along, and Lesley had to love her no matter how she felt about her inside.
Then, like all District 2 children with some money behind them, Romelie started training to be a Capitol-loving killing machine, indoctrinated to only want to bring pride to their District. By the time Romelie was 10, she could perform thirty six different arm and head locks, and could hit a bullseye with a catapult at twenty five metres. When she was fourteen, her and her gang had their own communication system, she could hold her breath underwater for a full two minutes and fought with knives as well as any trainer, and better than many of the Victors in her District. The faith from her mother and father, as little as they showed affection for her at home gave her the determination she needed to excel. Finally, she was given the instruction, a week before the Reaping of the year of her eighteenth birthday, that she was to volunteer as the female tribute for their District in place of any younger child whose name is drawn. Romelie’s pride had never mounted so high. She had a chance to win the Games, to honour her District and to finally feel love from her mother! The week-long wait until the Reaping was filled with final training, tactics and letters from her father to counterparts in the Captiol who would help to get sponsors and, if she was lucky, tilt the victory even more in her direction than it already was.
So came the Reaping. The name of a younger girl was called and, when heads would usually turn towards the poor creature that had been picked, the congregation looed to her, the hero that would step up and take her place. But the fear of the chance of her death had built inside Romelie. Standing there, in the District Square, with all eyes on her, she knew she couldn’t do it. Everything was silent as the little girl, who had also obviously been expecting to be saved from a fate she was so unprepared for, even with amateur experience behind her, walked to the stand uninterrupted.
Since then, Romelie’s mother has not looked her in the eyes. On Archer’s side, Lesley agreed that Romelie had brought shame to their family, and her father was humiliated to go about his work on the council. Romelie took back her mother’s surname and spent as much time as she could away from Archer, only at home when he was out at work. Many nights, she slept at her friends’ houses instead of her own; she was so lucky to still have those who would stand by her, and found her in no way embarrassing like her parents did. The close-knit group of nineteen year olds all took on the name Kylla as a mark of their togetherness, and have never been separated.
After training for their childhood, the new adults of District Two are expected to become the trainers for the next generation, or go to work in the Nut or as Peacekeepers. However, Romelie had alredy proved she couldn’t meet the expectations of violence-hungry adults, and considers herself an in-District wanderer. She’d have nothing to do with the Games, as the views of her parents were so based around them that they couldn’t even treat her like a human any more. She never participates in work efforts, as she feels that after eighteen long years of being just another Capitol minion, she deserved the freedom of her own life. But of course, she’d never do anything bad enough to get her in trouble with the abundant Peacekeepers in her District. With friends that wouldn’t abandon her for anything, and her only worry being the haunting guilt for the death of that poor girl, which the neighbourhood still talks about, Romelie’s life has started a new chapter, and she lives on with new morals over her killer instinct.
