Oscar Thoroughbred
Would anyone be able to guess he was a rancher, probably not. Most of the time, ranchers were viewed as older, with withered and wizened faces. They were not thought of as twenty-four year old boys, just getting into the stride of adulthood. Unless you were also from District ten, then maybe you would see the signs. The callouses of the palms of his hands, the hard muscles under tanned skin, and the little bit of hitch to his walk. If you noticed that, maybe you could tell he's been doing this since he was born. From a phone booth in Cheyenne
I made a promise to Diane

WILD HORSES I WANNA BE LIKE YOU
His eyes, always full of kindness and compassion, are a deep brown. Depending on the light, they can appear to be anywhere from amber to black. Many people say that they look similar to a horse's eyes, which pleases Oscar greatly. His hair is black, generally a flat black because of the amount of dust that is usually in it. It's often spiked up because of sweat, and him running his hand through his hair a lot. At times pieces of hay can be seen in it. His eyebrows are slightly bushy, and a slightly lighter shade than his hair. They are also quite straight, though they have a small downward curve on the outside end. They can make his expressions either very serious, or very comical. His nose is a little bid for his face, but he pays it no mind, being more concerned about the well-being of the horses than his own appearance. His mouth is a good size and both lips are slightly thin. His chin is somewhat square, adding to the severity of his face caused by his eyebrows.
His neck is long, but not overly so, and leads into strong, square shoulders. The arms that extend from his shoulders are strong and well-muscled from the amount of physical labour he does around the ranch. His hands are heavily calloused, and have long, yet strengthened, fingers. His torso is nicely shaped from the muscle he had built up over the years, and a six pack is somewhat visible when he goes without a shirt. Because of the rough work and somewhat poor nutrition available, he is quite lean and has little or no fat on him, it being muscle instead. His legs are long, and as muscled as the rest of him. He stands at a height of 6'2" and weighs about 162lbs, appearing to be a little skinny for his height though he is quite healthy. His long legs and ample muscle allow him to be a fast runner, as well as have good endurance and stamina. On his right calf a somewhat jagged scar stretches from about a quarter of the way down to two-thirds of the way down his calf. This was from when he climbed over a barb wire fence to help a mare, Singed Whiskers, at the age of eight. The same promise that I made

THROWING CAUTION TO THE WIND
At the prime of his youth, it's odd for someone so young to have a slight hitch in his walk, but all of the time he has ever put in the saddle has affected him. It's not a limp, and it doesn't hinder him in anyway, but it does show anyone who knows the signs that he is dedicated to his work and to horses, and that he's experienced for all his youth. The way he moves around the horses, a comfortable relaxed walk or sometimes jog, exposes his complete trust in horses. The toll of ranching is obvious on his body, but he hasn't developed the skin of leather and weathered features that many of the older men in that business had, but surely it was only a matter of time. After all, he is only seventeen.
Often, Oscar is seen wearing a short-sleeved shirt, or tank top, under a plaid shirt. He usually leaves the plaid shirt undone and rolls up the sleeves past his elbows. Sometimes, when it gets colder, he will wear a hoodie, generally his striped gray one. Generally his bottom half is covered by either jeans, fabric shorts, or jean shorts. Most of the time he wears a black or brown leather belt, and if it is really sunny he may put on a cowboy hat. All of his clothes smell like horses, without exception. But by now he doesn't even notice the smell, or if he does he enjoys it.Wild horses keep draggin' me away
And I'll lose more than I'm gonna win someday
Wild horses just stay wild
And her heart is all I break
Wild horses keep draggin' me away
I'LL RUN FREE TOO
Even from a young age, he always loved horses. He admired them for their grace, beauty and strength. Some people said he even acted like a horse at times, startling at odd things and always listening for danger. He didn't mind though, he was glad that someone would even consider that he was similar to such amazing creatures. In reality, he is very much like a horse, having grown up around them all his life he picked up some of their traits. He is naturally attentive, always listening for any sign of danger or distress. Whenever he can, he will visit each horse on the ranch and speak to them. People have called him a "horse whisperer" because of this, saying that he can read the mind of the horses and he can communicate with them. While he can communicate with them, he is unable to read the minds of anyone or anything, it just seems like it because he knows each horse very well. His knowledge of horses come into play almost constantly, as he is almost always dealing with horses in some way, shape or form.
Oscar is highly friendly, enjoying the company of others, especially horses. He can be quite playful, though perhaps a little rough at times. Being used to goofing around with animals that weigh nearly ten times his weight, he sometimes underestimates his strength. But he never means to cause harm, he can just be overly enthusiastic when it comes to interactions. Truly, he is very kind and caring, always trying to help people enjoy themselves. Some of the ways he attempts to cheer people up lead to him being viewed as goofy, or immature, but often times they will make the person laugh regardless. Overall he's a very loving person, though his main life's goal is to help any horse who has been abused or forgotten. He can't even count the times when he had persuaded the man into letting him bring home a malnourished horse and care for them. He essentially changed the ranch into a horse sanctuary, though there are still some chickens here and there.
He only ever lets the horses know his darker thoughts, knowing that they will always be there to listen and that they will never tell anyone. Animals are the only ones he fully trusts, and even then horses always come first. Whenever he's upset about anything, he goes to Sunny and spills his thoughts, or just stands there and leans against him. He doesn't open up to people because he tries to be like Sunny, always trying his best to be happy, and always there to cheer him up when he needs it, even on a bad day. His love for Sunny is as a brother, and a best friend. In his mind, they are soul mates. People don't understand their relationship and the complexity of it, and he just wishes that someday he might be able to show them. Because Sunny is the most important thing in his life. She'll watch me drive around her block
Gettin' courage up to stop
To make her one more promise
That I can't keep
WISH I COULD RECKLESSLY LOVE,
Oscar was born to a single mother. She had never been married and had given birth to him at the age of twenty-five. He is a bastard child, and has no memory of his father because his father didn't even know he had impregnated Oscar's mother when he left. Oscar's mother told Oscar that his father was a rich man who lived in one of the upper Districts, and that he had been very handsome and very friendly. However, they had only met a few times, but it was enough for Oscar to be created. As a young child, he accepted not having a father and loved his mother deeply. They lived in a small two-room house, which was more like a shed, on a ranch owned by a friend of his uncle. As he grew up he began to help around the ranch, feeding the chickens, cleaning out the coop and checking for eggs. At times he was lucky enough to help out with watering the horses. He lived happily on the farm, and treated the land-owner as a father.
Shortly after he had turned seven, a man came to their little shed. This wasn't the land-owner. The man had talked to Oscar's mother, and they had discussed something for nearly three hours. After they finished talking, his mother had explained to him that he would go live with the man on his ranch, and that she would not be coming with them. He had cried, not wanting to be separated from his only parent. The man had told him that he had many horses, and that there were also cattle and chickens there. This calmed Oscar, but only a little. He had said good-bye to his mother and the man took him to his ranch. He called it an apprenticeship, and had said that he had always known Oscar would be suited to take over the business after him. Being as young as he was, Oscar didn't know what the man meant. He only understood that he would be able to do chores and jobs that the bigger boys did, and that the man liked him.The way I love the rodeo
I guess I should let her go
Before I hurt her more
Than she loves me
LIKE I'M LONGING TO
He had lived on the ranch for a year, working more than he was used to and coming to bed over-tired until he became used to the routine, when there had been nickering from just outside of the man's property. He knew it wasn't their land, the man had been sure to tell him that as soon as he got there, and that he could get shot for trespassing. But the nickering came again and he went to investigate. Standing at the very edge of the property line, he climbed onto the fence that separated the two lands, being mindful of the shock wires strung throughout, and the barbed wire at the top. He looked out over the field on the other side of the fence and saw a horse standing there. It was obvious that she was heavily pregnant, and was having a hard time staying standing. Growing up with horses his whole life, Oscar knew she was dehydrated, which was very bad for the foal she was carrying.
He had wondered where she had come from, and if the person who owned that land knew she was there. Thinking that they didn't he thought quickly and decided to try and help her. Hopping over the fence, and cutting the inside of his right calf in the process, he made his way over to her. At first, she had been highly wary and shy of him, but he knew how to approach a shy horse. Soon, he was petting her neck gently, whispering to her softly. He told her that he would help her, and that she would only have to follow him. Unable to find anything to lead her with, and being too short to grab her mane, he just had to coax her into following him. Fortunately, she had been trained well and walked behind him, as long as he continued to talk to her.Wild horses keep draggin' me away
And I'll lose more than I'm gonna win someday
Wild horses just stay wild
And her heart is all I break
I WANNA RUN WITH THE WILD HORSES
He eventually got her onto the man's property, and led her to an open broodmare stall. As he got her water and food, he named her Singed Whiskers, because her colour reminded him of singed bark, and she had a lot of whiskers. The man had been shocked when he had seen her, and had told Oscar that he had been stupid, and brave, and smart, and kind, and that he was proud of him. From then on, Singed Whiskers, nicknamed Whisk, became his responsibility. He took care of her without fail every day. After a month or so, she began to foal. He had called everybody to watch, and the man had called the vet. Oscar was delighted when he was asked to help the vet. And so he helped deliver Whisk's foal, even though he was only eight.
He was the one to name the foal, and he was the unofficial owner as well. He called the colt Sunny, because as he got older his coat looked like the sky when the sun set. The man talked him through the basic training on a foal, breaking them to the halter first, then making your way up to the saddle. It was months before they could even begin that though, so he started by getting Sunny used to him. Over the next three years, he and Sunny learned as much from each other as they did from the man. They were training the other and growing a strong bond. Oscar rode Sunny for the first time when the colt was almost three, and he was eleven. The man had told him that it looked like he had been born in the saddle, and that Sunny had been born to be his. He told the man that he had been born for Sunny, and Sunny had been born to run, to jump, to prance and play.
Growing up together, the two matured and developed as the other did, continuing to have a strong bond. They were like brothers, and the closest of friends. Now, at the ages of seventeen and nine, they are two young males in their prime. Oscar has full ownership of Sunny, fully named Auburn Sunset, and is contemplating allowing his best friend to breed. He just knows that he has to find the right mare, to honour Whisk, who was now a retired mare and the personal pet of the man.Wild horses keep draggin' me away
And I'll lose more than I'm gonna win someday
Wild horses just stay wild
And her heart is all I break
