Lunch is almost as awkward as I am when I'm talking to girls.
Seriously, though. Everyone's just sitting here in silence. This twist that the Quell has given us, it's like the Capitol has torn out all our tongues. It could be as much, for all this is worth. A few whisper curious words here and there, but that's it. Whispers and the clatter of forks and knives against plates. At least the food is good.
I've walked in late, and just about everyone is at different tables. I'm crashing a party, it seems, and I'm not welcome.
I guess I have a problem here. Where the hell do I sit? There are no empty tables for me to seclude myself. I suppose I don't have to talk at all if I do sit down, but how boring is that. I walk down a line of tables where food sits. There's a lot of everything and things I haven't even seen before and things I particularly don't want to try because they smell funny. Mashed potatoes and chicken find their way onto my plate, along with a fluffy little biscuit. I stand at the line of tables for as long as I can, but then I'm getting funny looks from the cooks, so I turn around with a heavy sigh.
Nobody cares to look at me, and I don't quite care to look at them, either. I realize it doesn't matter where I sit. I'll be welcomed with a cold stare no matter what.
I don't have a purpose, or a reason, or anything really. Familiarity guides me towards Avon's table, where I settle down into a chair.
Crap, what do I say.
Crap.
My mouth hangs open awkwardly, and I look down at my food. I shove half of my biscuit in my mouth to avoid saying something, and my eyes settle on the snake ring on my right hand.
The biscuit is delicious, but I swallow quickly and blurt out the first question that pops into my mind.
"Will you kill me?"
