Age: 17
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 6
Appearance:
Maye has an open mouth and wide, precarious eyes. When she talks her entire face shapes itself to the mood of her conversation. She has a different expression for everything; all dramatic. In anger her eyebrows will make a dramatic arch and the once soft lips will turn fierce. When she’s sad, Maye’s entire face droops downward. She’s rather gifted at placing that sadness in her eyes to get what she wants. Perhaps the most beautiful of Maye’s expressions is of pure joy. Her face will light up; a genuine, warm smile and blushing red cheeks.Personality:
While her looks play to her mischievous side, Maye does have a very soft, subtle complexion. This allows her to give a sweet first impression. On occasion, she’ll show off a wicked smile to entice the boys. Her lips do tend to get her into a lot of trouble, (whether it be running her mouth or kissing.) Despite what her peers might think, there is much about her appearance that Maye dislikes. She feels her eyes are too dark and set too heavy in her face, making her look tired. “I have a neck like a giraffe, huge ears, a cleft chin, pasty skin, everything is boney…” The list of self-loathing goes on and on.
In reality, Maye does have a slightly anemic figure. This is typical of many girls her age in district 6, even some boys. She’s slightly tall, at five feet six inches. Brown eyes, brown hair, brown hues to her tired skin; everything is dull (in her opinion.)
Maye’s insecurities about her appearance are in stark contrast to the rest of her personality. She’s confident, even with the yearlings, who have known her longest. She thinks she’s right about everything and is stubborn, like a child. It’s difficult for people to get to know Maye without being overwhelmed by how vicious her personality really is. Everyone she knows she either wants something from or has been forced to put up with. There are few that she admires, maybe January, but she would never admit it.History:
Being as wicked as she is, Maye has no problem taking advantage of people. She has a number of boys wrapped around her finger, most of which she has no real feelings for. Girls despise her. Adults pity her, simply because they don’t know any better. She puts up a front, her bubbly energetic side, in hopes of getting people to trust her. That’s not to say Maye always has some secret agenda hidden up her sleeve. Sometimes, the seventeen year old just likes to have a bit of fun. That is, if November doesn’t get in her way.
Maye’s attachment to the yearlings, as expected, plays a huge role in her life. Most of the time they don’t even realize how much she cares about them, simply because she doesn’t show it, but on occasion, Maye might even take some of their opinions to heart. (Mostly January, sometimes February) The general belief is that she’s selfish and childlike, so how could she care so deeply for anyone? Maye struggles to disprove this opinion others have of her. She does little to make herself truly lovable, when in reality, that’s all she really wants.
Of all the disillusions Maye has about her own personality, perhaps the most “quirky” is her point of view on life. She believes that, to get ahead in life, one has to be as selfish and competitive as she is. Any positive influence given to her seems to go unnoticed, as there are plenty of them in the yearlings. She takes advantage of the things she has, and is always expecting more. This logic is sometimes mind boggling. Maye is intelligent, but because of her stubbornness, she has yet to put things into perspective. She lives in the present, caring only for herself. Most of the yearlings believe it is unlikely that she ever will ever change her ways. Perhaps it’s all a part of her being born in such a particular month…
Like many of her companions, Maye has little recollection of her early childhood. She doesn’t remember her parents, or if she had any in the first place. Of the many strange beliefs she has, perhaps the strangest is Maye’s belief that one can exist without having been born to a mother and father. “I don’t have parents. I just happened one day.” Of course this statement is only sarcastic. When asked about her past that’s the most common response she gives (that, or she’ll just laugh.) She doesn’t like to delve into her past like some of the others do. She thinks they get too caught up in those things.Codeword: odair
One reason Maye likes to live in the present, is perhaps the severity of her disturbing past. Most all of the yearling express some kind of discontent about the way they were raised, be it in foster homes or out on the streets. On the occasion she is forced to remember, Maye recalls terror, pain, and heartache. She’s experienced all kinds of evil, being passed among men in district six since she was twelve years old. The abuse she suffered created in Maye a deep, fierce hatred for men. She learned to take advantage of them in an emotional way. It was her only means of getting what she wanted.
January and his friends came into Maye’s life quite miraculously. They didn’t know a thing about her, but she made a good first impression pretending to be a sweet and innocent little doll. “I need a place to stay.” Always Maye, taking advantage of other’s generosity. They gave her a home and she appreciated it, but has since done little to show her appreciation. Maye doesn’t have a job. She still steals, and only recently has learned to contain her promiscuous behavior (slightly.) She loves to flirt with the boys in the yearlings, but gets scolded quite often for it. January probably wishes she would get a job, but she doesn’t care.
