Dusk climbed under the fence stealthily. A small amount of happiness that was the most she could ever recieve entered her being. She was leaving all her worries and woes, by simply crossing this boundary. It was like stepping out of a cage, being free from the chains wrapped around her body, even if it was only for a short time. Dusk smiled, just because of it. The forest was silent, and anticipation was crawling under her skin like an itchy rash. She wanted to run, run forever and ever and release herself from her tight chains that she would willingly have to return to in only a short time. Dread filled her viens as she thought of the horrible moment that would come, but she shook it away.
Just focus. Thinking about it will only bring it closer to you. You're wasting time.
The thought was much more mature than her brain should hold. She was barely 12, yet probably acted 40 years over. After her father had left her she had to take care of everybody, be the mommy when she had only just lost her own. Dusk waited, waiting in a horrible suspense for the tears to come down her worn cheeks. But they never came, and deep down she knew that the crying had stopped days after her mother's death. She didn't want to think about that though, but she did. A heart crushing sadness made her heart stop, and she actually thought for a second she could collaspe right there, and have a heart attack or a siezure and die. But nothing happend, and her breath slowly returned to her seared lungs.
Dusk sighed, because she was actually sad she wasn't dead. She had grown too fast, and now her brain could barely handle it. But her eyes suddenly hardened. Her shell that protected her from the sadness, and from the realities of growth in herself surrounded her.
Just do it. Handle it.
And thats just how life was. You just had to deal with it. Her eyes scanned the fence for any movement, and then left. The leaves on trees and bushes brushed her skin, scrapping it as she walked. Dusk didn't feel it though, and didn't care. She lept silently to a fallen log, and then on to the hill above.
The light snow on the ground helped her track as she searched for a bird to kill. She had only brought a knife, and that was all she needed. It was like her very soul was built to survive. Like her mind was like an animal's, with pure instinct and strategy.
Dusk was fully alert as she walked more, just waiting for her prey to reveal itself to her senses. She felt every crack of twig that her foot made as it came down silently, every shake of the branches over head caused by the wind. Even the movement of a pebble as it was dislodged from its place, and rolled down the hill.
Wait, a rock?
Quickly, Dusk formed into a defensive position. She scanned the ground up ahead for any sign of cause for why the rock had moved. Suddenly though, she heard a footstep. A human footstep.
Oh no.
Dusk creeped down into a bush, trying to blend in to the scrawny branches. Fear was scorching her insides, but instinct was staying beside her like a loyal dog.
Stay quiet....
But what if it was a peacekeeper? What if they were scouting the forest for once, and they came to kill any human's who dare hunt in the woods illegally? What if they had a hovercraft?
She set these questions aside, trying not to freak out as ardrinaline was setting her muscles in shakes, ready to run for dear life.
If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
And of course such an insane question like that would be the one to pop in her head. Out of all the other questions in the world, like Would I live? or Will I ever see my father again? this question popped in her mind. But did it make a sound? But would anyone ever know that, if they couldn't be there to hear it?
If a young girl screams in the forest, but no one is there to hear it, does she make a sound?
A shrudder went through her body, which was quickly growing limp. Dusk took a deep breath, and tried to relax.
If a young girl dies in a forest, and no one is there to see, will they ever know she is dead?
For the first time in months, Dusk was honestly scared. If she died now, all her siblings would probably be abandoned by her father, and maybe even die of starvation. Probably suffer until their very limbs could not lift up an inch. She was not going out now; atleast not without a fight. Dusk held her knife high, and got ready to fight as she heard the sound of footsteps growing closer. She knew the figure would find her, but she would be ready.
