Dusk starred at Trench, eyes still sad. He was trying to prove to her he could take care of her and her siblings. But could he really? It must be a thing of fantasy then, that he could actually support her family in any small degree. Maybe this was a fantasy, just a dream. Maybe she was just dreaming in her cold little cot at home, snuggled between Coy and April, with Evangaline on her chest. Maybe things as good as this only happened in dreams.

Her face lightened, but only slightly as she thought of this, and as he said he wouldn't have gotten into this if he knew he couldn't support her, and her siblings. Dusk knew though, knew how much a baby costs. Evangaline used to cost more than two of her siblings, with the diapers and such until she was potty trained. But they had taught her young, so they could have enough food. Suddenly though, Dusk was pulled harshly away from her thoughts and daydreams as a word came out of Trench's mouth, and as he wrapped his warm arms around her again. The word though, was what brought her away the most.

He said he could tell Dusk blamed herself for her death. His words sliced her open, and the sadness came through before she could put a shield up to stop it. But she did stop the tears from rolling like lava down her hot cheeks, only so she could talk when he was done, and not just mutter inaudible mumers. But her heart suddenly lit aflame, as he spoke of how disapointed her mother would be. In her stealing, in her doing bad things. And her shield broke apart, bit by bit as a deep part of her she had lodged down into the wedge of her brain long ago surfaced. It was something called right and wrong. Something that told you what was mean, and what you probably should be doing. Not stealing, not breaking rules, not taking advantage of others. But what was right and wrong when you are only trying to survive?

For some reason, while all this emotion was swimming through her body wildly, and breaking every inch of shield she had left, she looked... Well calm, at peace somehow. Like some cloud had cleared, but for some reason she also felt like she was being too emotion about the simplest of things. Why was she breaking down just because he spoke of her mother? Why was she realizing how "bad" stealing was now? But maybe it was just because all these emotions had been stored, and were now being let lose from some invisible force she had once controled, but now let go.

Trench went on, about how he wanted to replace her parents, but knew he could never. How her mother would want her to accept help, and blah blah blah. She was even going to interupt him, but let him finish, and finally spoke after all her emotions had been let out through a simple breath.
"Trench.... Everything I know you said is true. I know..[/color]
Her voice cracked, even though she got all her emotion out. She simply took another breath, and tried again.
"I know almost everything you said was true. My mother... Well she probably is frowning down at me, where ever she is. I've done more bad things than I care to count, from stealing a chicken to pickpocketing a peacekeeper. Your right, I shouldn't have been in the situation I am in, but fate put me here. But, there is one thing where you were wrong. You could easily replace my parents. Its not like I would forget my mother, but I definately need a man in my house."[/color]
Dusk hoped in her entire soul she was making sense. Her brain was befuddled, screwed up in the most bizzar way.
"If that makes sense.... I've known since my mother died that I'm just not fit for the job of taking care of all my siblings and stuff."[/color]
She sighed, took another breath before continuing, and started to speak again.
"I'm sorry I've been so stubborn. I just don't want to put my weight on you, when you have a baby coming, and I don't want you to regret helping me. By the way... I hit a deer."[/b]
She laughed a akward laugh, one filled with a tiny bit of sadness that filled the whole laugh. Dusk ended up just starring at Trench unresponsively after that though, like the emotion bomb that had been set off had left her impassively numb.[/size]

Trench smiled, a comforting smile, at Dusk when she mentioned she had hit the deer. "Dusk, you would never weigh me down. You are the sweetest girl I have ever met. If I were to leave you now I would never be able to live with myself. Please just give me one chance to prove to you I have the ability to takecare of you. I am fully aware of the expensis, but I am more than ready to take them on. If you truly believe that I have what it takes to be a father figure to you than give me a chance to prove it.

I know that I am not perfect, nor will I ever be. But, I want to help you in any way I can. I know this will sound strange, but my wife, she could be a mother to you. I know that we can't replace your real parents, but you could be part of my family. You could have those people in your life that would love you and care about you." His voice slowly trailed off wondering if she could hear a word he said. Seeing the emptiness of sadness in her eyes he walked over to her again. He took her hand and pulled her into his lap. Slowly he began to rock back and forth, and remembering an old lullaby he began to hum it.

The mockingjays that inhabited the woods took up the melody quickly and added it to his humming until it became a soft chorus around them. It echoed softly around them as Trench continued to hum the song, and even after he had finished the song lingered on. He spoke softly the last line of the lullaby to her. "The world needs you, so live on my love." He continued rocking back and forth in silence, and finally spoke again. "That last line always meant the most to me. It reminded me how much my mother loved me, and reminded me that I should do what it takes to survive.

I'm not sure how you wish to interpret that last line, but I wanted you to know it. I want you to know how much you already mean to me, and that I will make sure you live on."

Dusk's emotions finally seemed to sew slowly back together, into one whole once more. They seemed at peace now, less frantic and more tranquil. Like needles had been stuck into her weak body, filled it with numbing medicen. It had hurt at first, having all the emotions swirling aimlessly in her dark body, but afterwards she was just so numb, the medicen making her brain feel high and a incessant buzzing forming in her ear.

Trench started to smile at her, and Dusk curiously looked at him. He started to speak again, telling her he wanted to support her, he wanted to prove to her that he could. And that she was sweet. But sweet didn't exactly help you survive in the world, now did it?

Yes... Dusk did promise to act and think only her age required required her to... So she shook this thought away quickly.

Trench went on about how he wanted to help support her, help her. How maybe his wife could be her.. new mother. He said they would care about her, and her siblings. And to have someone actually care about her... That was just more the reason to survive in this sullen world. Maybe though Trench could be more like the uncle she never had. He was quite young, only just about to have his first born. But he was good with children, and she would give him that. Her little siblings would love him. But to have new parents.... It just didn't seem right. Dusk did like him though. He was not only dedicated, but nice and generous. She wondered what his wife was like, what color hair she had, if she had a soft voice or if it was very imprudent. Maybe she was fun, or maybe she was diligent, just like Trench himself. She also wondered if the baby was a boy or a girl. Or if Trench and his wife even knew that.

In the middle of her thinking, Trench walked over to her. He once again retrieved her hand and pulled her into his lap. This time she didn't object, imediatly laying on his chest. He then began to hum a lullaby, his chest rumbling comfortably underneath her ears. She closed her eyes, trying to remember sweet memories but ended up just listening to his lullaby intently, and creating a new memory, one she would cherish forever. After so much cold, warmth entered her lungs, filled her whole body like a sweet, warm liquid.
Love...[/i]
She soon too started humming to his lullaby. Soon even the mockingjays joined in, and the whole forest seemed to hum it softly, from the wind through the leaves to the pounding of squirrel feet against the baren ground. The rumbling of Trench's chest stopped too soon, but the swee melody still rang through the air in mockingjay imitations. Trench spoke softly into her ear the last words of the lullaby into her ear.
The world needs you, so live on my love.[/color]
The words were intresting, and peaceful in a way. Comforting, special and powerful words. Words you could think about for hours and still not totally understand the meaning. Trench talked about how the line was important to him, and he wanted her to remember it. How he wanted her to live on. Dusk just nodded, still listening to the mockingjay imitations that were soon getting softer and softer.
"Thank you Trench...."[/color]
They were simple words, yet she tried to put as much as what she was feeling as she could in every letter. Gratitude, Love, Acceptance, and Hope.[/size]

It was a simple phrase, thank you, but he could sense that there was more to it than others would. It meant so much for him to hear those words, and a feeling of acceptance settled over him. It made him feel like he still had a shot at being something and making a difference. "No Dusk, don't thank me, I should thank you. If it weren't for you I would never have realized that I still care about people. That I can help people even if I'm not perfect, and you have given me a reason to live my life fully again. Before it was just my wife and I, but now...well we have a family of sorts now."

The mockingjays finally grew silent around them, and the forest seemed so peaceful. Only the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees broke the silence around them. Trench felt he could sit there forever holding Dusk, but he knew that he should probably be leaving the forest now. Darkness was settling around them and it would be difficult to get back in to District 12 because the Peacekeepers would be patrolling. He rose to his feat still holding Dusk, and than placed her on the ground.

"We should be going now Dusk, it's getting late. If we're going to get your siblings we need to leave now." He offered his hand to her remembering how his parents used to hold his hand. He wasn't sure if she would accept to hold his hand, but it felt right offering it to her. Especially with darkness settling over the woods.

Dusk ignored Trench's words. She really didn't want to take credict for that much, for making Trench feel again, feel compassion for others, and giving him a family. It wasn't really her right to claim it anyway, he was the one who even had provoked it, and he was the one claiming the family, taking care of it, and helping her. Their deal wasn't right to her anyway. Dusk got the best parts of the deal. It even made her feel a little guilty inside, for getting the better part of the deal but she knew if she tried to change it, or argue it wasn't fair for him Trench would just object, find some way to make her stubborn brain to think differently.

Suddenly she noticed how dark it was getting. Her siblings were probably starting to get hungery. Worry formed in her brain, and she knew it would stay there until she confirmed that her siblings were safe and sound. A headache formed, and Dusk sighed. Sometimes, whenever she was worried she would get a migrane, and the aching could sometimes get to be unbarable. But Dusk desprately didn't want to get out of Trench's arms.

To her advantage, Trench decided for her. He set her down to the ground, and though her heart objected her brain thought it was best to go, and get rid of its migrane when it was home. His voice cut the silence of the woods. He said they should get going, and Dusk silently agreed with him. Then he did the most weirdest thing, yet it felt like it was supposed to be normal. He held out his hand. Such a simple gesture. Yet it felt so weird to her, like alot of the things he had been doing today. She liked to be free, and rather not hold his hand, but she knew it would hurt him if she didn't take it. So she did, and the warmth was quite comforting. At first her grip was hesistant, but soon it didn't feel as alien and she held it tighter.

The woods were still silent as they made their way through the woods. Dusk really did feel helpless, in these big woods. She knew District 12 like the back of her hand, but quickly in these woods she had grown totally lost. She didn't know what she would have done without Trench.

Trench recognized the hesitancy in her grip at first, but it changed to a more natural feeling. It was awkward for him at first, but with the sky growing dark it let him know that she was with him. It would also make it easier to travel through the woods with her knowing that she wouldn't get lost. At first the forest around him confused him, he had been in the forest late, but not this late. Areas that were formally very familiar to him were now foreign. It took all his hunting abilities to find the direction to travel in.

He walked forwards still holding onto Dusk, firmly but carefully. The sounds of the woods now seemed foreign to his ears also. The mockingjays were silent, maybe to silent. Something was amiss around them, it was far to quite. Slowing down he began to look around carefully trying to find the disturbance. Instinctively he pulled Dusk closer to him fearing that whatever was out there might try and get her.

Still no sound from the woods, as if the trees knew how much danger they were in. He walked forward much slower than before his eyes and ears trying to pick up anything out of the ordinary. For a moment he thought he saw a pair of eyes staring out at him, but they disappeared quickly. Fear, fear was now gripping Trench like a cold hand. The last traces of light were going, they had spent to much time in the woods.

The forest was dark, yet full of life. The mockingjays had went silent, as the other creatures of the day. They were probably sleeping, safe in their little homes. Where Dusk probably should be right now, safe in her little home, with her family, and her new family too. But only the animals were safe as the nighttime creatures awoke from a deep sluber, coming out to search for prey, for food. Dusk could litterally sense the dangers of every corner, sense a predator was watching them, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, and kill them in cold blood.

Her blood went cold as she thought of these fears. The darkness could hold anything, and she was afriad of anything. Anything lurking steathily in the darkness where we helpless creatures could not see them, only their blood red eyes. Dusk tried to wipe these fears away, no matter how vivid her imagination could be. Trench knew how to get back, they would be fine. Suddenly though, eyes reached out at them from the darkness. Her grip tightened to Trench's hand, and she was glad she had taken it. She gripped it so hard, in fact, that she saw his fingers turn white.
"Oops..."
She losened her grip, but only so blood could go through his fingers. She started starring down at the ground, just waiting to get back over the fence, urgently wanting to go home. At her feet the dark shape of footprints could barely be seen. The sun had totally desipated, and darkness enveloped them like cold ropes.

Fear still gripped Trench as he looked around. He sensed Dusk's fear when she gripped his hand, but when she lightened her grip he tightened his own. He was not going to let her go not for anything. With his free hand he drew the shortsword from his pack, not leaving anything to chance. Suddenly behind them a branch broke, and with it Trench's heartbeat stopped. Something was following them, and he was pretty sure that it wasn't friendly. He turned his head slightly in the hope he might see what it was, but it had already faded into the darkness behind them.

He proceeded forward walking a little faster this time. Fear driving him forward, all sense of precaution gone, he tried to remember the route to take. Suddenly something lunged out of the woods to his right, the side that Dusk was standing on. With a yell he threw her behind him placing himself between her and the creature. It charged forward and raked it's claws along his side leaving a bloody gash. His eyes caught the eyes of the beast, and it looked like one of the mutts from the Capitol. With the creature now following the scent of blood he slung Dusk onto his back. He would be much faster this way. With a grunt of pain he began to run forward, sliding his sword back into the pack he took the knife out. He continued running forward and another one of the creatures flew at him. Throwing the knife it got caught in it's open maw, but it remained airborne and slashed his forearm.

He ran forward, perspiration dripping into his eyes, and pain blinding his vision. Suddenly he noticed something that looked familiar to him. The stump that held his pack, that was the mark he needed, it was only a little farther to the fence around District 12. He could hear the breathing of the creatures behind him, and while still running he slid Dusk off his back and tucked her infront of him. Spying the fence he put on one last burst of speed, and just as the creatures would have had him he threw himself under the hole in the fence.

Still breathing heavily he looked behind him to see the creatures falling back into the shadows of the forest. Releasing Dusk and placing her on the ground beside him he took stock of his wounds. They would need some tending to, but they weren't to bad. Lying on his back hetook deap breathes trying to get the oxygen back into his weery body. "Are you okay Dusk, did they get you anywhere?"

As Trench's grip tightened so did her heart. Dusk's heart was almost colostrophobic in her tight chest. Despite this, it still beat as hard as ever, pounding gallons of blood into her frail body every second. And every beat caused her brain to hurt more and more with every on going boom of her pulse. The migrane had gotten worse, and now a ringing formed in her ears. The eyes seemed just like a dream, this whole forest a horrible nightmare. Her vision was failing her but ardrinaline soon made her see the outline of beasts.

She wished she could pinch herself to wake up, but her arms wouldn't budge. They were frozen in place by some invisable force, a force that seemed to have a little fear and some other emotions she couldn't quite reckonize.

A yell suddenly cut the air, but it seemed like the yell was going down a long tunnel, like it was far away from where Dusk was standing. The yell echoed, and after a few seconds that felt like years she was hoisted up into the air. She felt like she was flying, until she felt Trench's shoulder blades moving below her. Or maybe it was his back... But muscles that belonged to Trench were moving, and she could feel them. They were warm, and strong, but stressed from ardrinaline and fear. She felt sorry for him, sorry she couldn't help. But she was scared too. Suddenly a tremble went through Trench's body, and she knew he had been hit, probably by the breast. Dusk tried to scream, but no voice could erupt from her mouth.

Trench ran faster and faster. She was helpless on his shoulders, just waiting for him to let her go and let her help him. She just hoped when he let go his body wouldn't go limp, and he wouldn't stare at her from lifeless eyes, like so many other people she had loved and seen like that, with dead eyes. She was surprised, but at the same time not surprised when she felt a little bit of horrible dread that soon filled her heart, how sad she would be if Trench was to die. Because even though they had just met, they were both in this, both in it to survive, together.

Suddenly, they fell to the ground. She could barely hear the humming of the fence as she fell down into the ground, relief flowing through her. But fear suddenly spiked her and she realized she couldn't feel Trench, to see if he was alright. Her migrane still made her wozzy but she managed to stumble up. Trench's voice took her out of her dream, but only for a second. It took her a few seconds to comprehend his words, but she finally did. Examining her body, she found a rip in her shirt, with warm blood oozing out. For some reason she couldn't feel it, it only itched a little bit. She quickly put her jacket over it, because she didn't want Trench to worry about her. The slight blood loss made her dizzy, but it was good because when she was dizzy the migrane pain was slightly numbed.

Dusk looked over to Trench, scanning him for injuries. Blood was trickling out of his side, along with some other injuries. Her motherly senses kicked in and she quickly used a rock to tear part of her shirt sleve off. She wrapped it around his side, not waiting for him to object in any way.
"I'm sorry Trench, I should have helped you."
Her voice was far away, and annoying. It increased the ringing in her ears for a time. It went away quickly, but she couldn't help herself from wincing slightly. She watched Trench's chest heave up and down for air for awhile. [/size]

When Trench had taken in enough air he tried to form the words to speak to Dusk. He wanted to tell her he was fine, but he couldn't find the words. So to make himself feel better and hopefully put her at ease he sat up and wrapped his arms around her in an embrace. Breaking away briefly he scanned her for injuries. He saw a wound she was trying to cover up with her jacket and he pulled the jacket away to see it.

It was a grazing wound that might have hit a nerve from the amount of bleeding. He knew both of them needed bandages and medical aid to the wounds before infection could set in. Forcing himself into a standing position he took her again in his arms and carried her into town. "Dusk, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have stayed in the forest that long with you. I should have known that the forest would be crawling with hideous creature."

Moving one arm to support her he used the other to brush the hair from her forehead. She appeared to be shaken up, but other than that one wound she seemed fine. This was a great way to start off their friendship. He had gotten attacked, she got injured, yup this was a fine start. "Don't worry, I'll get us some aid for our wounds, we'll be right as rain in no time."

OOC:((Wanna move this into District 12 since they are techniquelly back in town. Could you make the topic if so please, I don't mean to be lame, but I've been realllyyyy busy lately.))
