Diamond remembered when she was a little freshman. Of course, it wasn’t hard for her, and that was why she was taking this mentor job. Whomever she got would never have to worry about struggling through hell. After all, it was only right that she help someone fit into this place, since she didn’t have any trouble herself. Leaning closer to the mirror in her locker, Diamond swiped on another layer of lipstick in a swift, smooth movement. She rubbed her lips together and closed the lipstick tube, satisfied with her makeup. It was the first day of the program, and the first time she would be meeting her freshmen; she wanted to look her best. Well, and there was the fact that she planned on taking this girl to a dinner party after class got out, and she would probably have to help them with their clothes. And if she had to play dress up for them, she wouldn’t have time for herself.

Boy this girl was slow. She was already five minutes late, and Diamond hated waiting on people. Patience was not something that she was good at, and she never had been. If she was going to show this girl the ropes it would help if she actually showed up. An annoyed huff escaped Diamond’s lips as she looked around the hallway. She was going to give the girl two more minutes, and then she was going to leave her to fend for herself. It was quite rude to waste someone’s time, and Di wasn’t going to stand for her time to be wasted.

The hallways were soon flooding with students. This was why they were supposed to meet five minutes ago, and then they wouldn’t have had to worry about trying to find each other in a crowded hall. Perhaps it was as simple as the girl was unable to sneak out of class early. Di hadn’t thought of that—perhaps the girl was lacking the cunning needed to sneak out of class. Well that was just something that she needed to learn then. And who better to learn from than the Queen? Nobody, that’s who. Perhaps this would be a fun experience—molding people seemed fun in her head at least.

Mentoring.

The very word set Corran Devereaux on edge. A mentor was someone who she looked up to, someone who she recognised as wise and independent. Someone who noted her lust to learn and expand her skills and knowledge. Someone who reminded Corran a little of herself. Like Callidos, for instance.

[/color] The fourteen year old did not need someone to tell her what to do, or how to act, or who to avoid, or where to go - and the fact that it was compulsory for all those her own age ticked her off a tad. If she needed any help, she'd find her older sisters or brother - as they usually weren't far apart. Not that she thought she'd need it, she was plenty fine enough by herself to survive her days in the higher years of school. Since she began the transition to the upper grades, the petite blonde had done what she'd always done, keep to herself, her head down and stay out of trouble. Trouble seemed to have a light but prominent grasp on Corran whilst she was at school, but usually it was to do with not paying attention to the classes that she'd already learnt or wandering around the buildings instead of attending.

This time, however, mentoring had completely slipped her mind. Corran had sat perched on a bench outside the library with a book, getting lost in it's pages. Only when the rushing chorus of chattering students invaded her ears did she pull herself into reality and looked in alarm at her wristwatch - realising that she was already late. One to be punctual, Corran had let out a little squeak and slammed the book shut, tucking it under her arms and dove into the sea of teenagers. She didn't have time to store the leather-bound book in her bag, squeezing through the crowds as she clutched it to her green jumper. As she made her way toward what she hoped was the right direction, her eyes sought for her mentor - before she realised she didn't even know what the girl looked like. All she'd been given was the time, date, location and name of her new guide; someone called Diamond Star.

Corran didn't need to look twice to know she'd spotted the girl. From what her sisters had told her, she'd already made a mental construction of what Diamond looked like - and wasn't far off, if she said so herself. Watching the tall blonde apply make-up to her lips told Corran all she needed to know, being a studier of body language. Yep, she was sure she'd got the right girl. Hoping that Diamond wouldn't be too annoyed at her slight lateness, the blonde tiptoed up to the older girl and coughed slightly, pronouncing words she'd spoken for the first time that day in a mannerly fashion drilled into herself and her siblings since they could talk.

"Excuse me - terribly sorry for being late. Are you Diamond Star? I believe you're my... mentor" Corran spoke equitably, forcing her last words out from her throat. From what she saw now she assumed that the two would have their differences - hoping her manners would make up for her lack of being on time.

Diamond was getting ready to leave when she heard a quiet voice behind her. It was about time. With a blank look on her face—that really could look quite mean—Diamond slowly turned around and looked down at the girl. Corran definitely looked the part of a loner freshman; she was clutching a book for dear life, and her voice was quiet. “You’re late.” Diamond stated her tone not too nice (But not as mean as it could get, either). First impressions were an important thing, and this girl had not made a good one. Although she hadn’t made the worst one Diamond had ever seen. Ha, that impression would be etched into her mind forever. It wasn’t very often that a stranger gave you a running hug, almost knocking you to the ground, before they realized that you weren’t who them were looking for. That girl had to have been embarrassed for days.

Arms slightly crossed, Diamond slowly walked around Corran, shaking her head. “You live in the district of glam and this is what you choose the wear around? Sweetie, don’t you have some pride in yourself? Okay, lesson number one!” Diamond almost squealed in excitement; she didn’t have to make this girl exactly like her, but she could at least get her on the right track with the glam life. “You have to have confidence. If you have the right amount of confidence people will notice you—possibly even in that….thing. Someone can own the most fabulous outfit but not rock it because of lack of confidence. And you’re in the District of the glam—you have to be proud of it!” She paused, looking at the girl, “I’m not saying you have to walk around like this all the time” she gestured to herself, after all, she liked to look astonishing 24/7, “But you should still have pride in the latest fashion. Plus it’ll totally help you out around here, and when it comes to finding a job.”

Her whole big spiel would probably go ignored by this girl. It was obvious that she didn’t care about fashion, but that didn’t mean that Diamond couldn’t try. This girl had the potential to look amazing in right fashion, if she would just give it a chance. It wasn’t like Diamond was saying she needed to chance who she was, just that looking a certain way would get her farther in life, regardless of her personality. She had seen it in work many times. She had seen people less qualified for a job get it because of the way they presented themselves. It was key in District One.

Mortified. That would be a good word to describe how Corran felt at the moment. She could tell that the afternoon was going to be a handful, but Ripred, what she would do to let the ground sink her up at this moment. "You're late" Diamond had stated with a cool glare on her face - and it took all of Corran's willpower not to blurt back an 'obviously.' Catching herself, she assumed that the older girl would not appreciate a smart-mouthed reply; and not wanting to cause trouble, Corran stayed silent. At least that was something she was good at.

Diamond scanned her eyes over Corran's outfit, tut-ing as she walked in a circle with a critical gaze. “You live in the district of glam and this is what you choose the wear around? Sweetie, don’t you have some pride in yourself?" Honestly, the clothes her mother had picked out for this morning were apparently the best in the district - as the Devereaux's were always well presented. Disgusted at the thought of looking like a clone of her siblings, Corran had felt the need to add a bit of her own personality to her clothing - hence the jumper. She'd snuck it along with her to school, waiting patiently at the depths of her bag before she was out of site from her house, and had thrown it over her head the moment she felt her mother's gaze snap away from her disappearing figure. Corran didn't mind looking nice - it's just that her nice was quite the contrasting comparison to her Mother's definition of nice.

Keeping her vow of silence, Corran instead thought selfishly that of course I have pride, I am a Devereaux and an unusual one at that. All of Corran's life she'd been brought up to drink in her family's wealth and popularity - that they were the best of the best. Even at school, Corran had simply been known as Devereaux - the name itself leaving such an impression to anyone that heard it that Corran felt no need to add her first name at all. Although her mother had pestered her to keep up the family name to it's highest of impressionable standard, Corran rebelled against all her mother's wishes. She hardly talked; observing people instead, soaking in the slightest of body movements and twitches to read people like the books in libraries that she treasured so dearly. Though her face might not show it, she was already getting a little peeved off at this girl, who reminded her more and more of her mother every minute. Mother would love this girl, she thought bitterly to herself.

Ripred, this girl sounded exactly like her mother - and from what she saw, was quite fond of herself. Corran was unsure that this mentoring was the orientation and help with school-work that she'd read about on the handouts, but was used to being fussed over and prodded, so let Diamond continue. “I’m not saying you have to walk around like this all the time - but you should still have pride in the latest fashion. Plus it’ll totally help you out around here, and when it comes to finding a job.”[/b]

I have plenty of confidence, thank you - I'm just quiet; I get enough hell from mother and my sisters about fashion and looking nice so I should be ok; and if I even make it through all the reapings for the next 4 years, I'm going to work with my father and assist running the jewellery business, thank you very much.[/s][/color] Corran shoved her crazed thoughts out of her head and instead nodded, hoping that the smile on her face wasn't too forced - as it usually had to be at the awful parties and events it was compulsory for her to attend every other week. Just smile and nod and go along with it, her father had advised when she came complaining to him about the system a few days ago, and decided to take up his words of wisdom and put them into action. "Alright" she replied simply, preparing herself to be carted around by Diamond for however long this had to go for. Doing what she was told was second nature to Corran, and hopefully she'd get out of this without turning into a complete dressed-up doll.

Was this girl bored? Diamond frowned as she gave the girl a hard look. From what she had heard, there were a lot of girls who were disappointed that Diamond wasn’t their mentor, and yet, this girl could care less. Obviously she wasn’t too into fashion, like Di was. This was going to take a lot out of her. “Okay, obviously you don’t care about the fashion—although I’m not going to completely drop it! What is it that you were hoping to get out of the mentor program?” She sighed as she spoke, making no effort to hide her displeasure. This was not going to be a fun experience, she could already tell.

This girl was probably looking for academic help or some shit like that. Corran just had that look to her. She was quiet, didn’t care about fashion, and was uninteresting in what Diamond had to say. “You know,” Diamond said slowly, “There are ways to look fashionable, without looking like all you care about is fashion. I’m guessing that you have a mom that cares about fashion, as what you’re wearing is highly fashionable—under that ugly jumper thing. I can help you find your own sense of fashion that pleases both you and your mother. But you have to be willing to work with me. I cannot work with someone who won’t give me some feedback. Speak your mind. But you also better be able to handle me speaking my mind. Work with me, and I’ll be more willing to work with you.”

It would look bad on Diamond’s part if she couldn’t make this work, and she did not want to disappoint her parents like that. They were so proud of her for volunteering to do this. If Corran wouldn’t help her, she would have to find somebody to trade her kids. Who else did she know who was mentoring? With a frown on her face, Diamond crossed her arms, waiting for an answer, trying to think of who she could pawn this girl off on if it wasn’t going to work.
