Cause baby you're a firework, come on show 'em what you're worth
make 'em go, oh, oh, oh
Watching the Games was pretty much mandatory in District Two. School, chores, eating... these things became optional, which suited Duchess just fine. She'd never liked school (except for the social aspects), chores just got in the way of training, and she only eat to feed her muscles. She could go a week to ten days without losing muscle mass, and so she popped appetite suppressants that her mother had gotten, probably illegally. It didn't matter. Anything to help the Career keep her focus, and if there was anything that was going to derail Duchess, it was the Games.
It was damnable difficult to be stuck in a chair watching other tributes have their chance at glory. And really, this year's batch sucked at it. She was actually embarrassed to be from an upper district. With the exception of Midas, they were in poor form -- or dead already. After the Bloodbath! Duchess had done her very best to contain her rage, but of course she wasn't alone. Amped up from the anger and disappointment of her friends, she'd said some things that weren't strictly lady-like, or that fit with the image she had constructed over many years of training. But it was the Bloodbath, damnit, and they'd been trained! How could they fall to people from districts like Ten and Twelve?
She'd stuck around as the remaining alliance divided up the wealth. Not that Duchess was interested in them - she had bet her remaining money on Midas - but because she was interested in what came next. She wanted to see how the tributes scattered, how they reformed alliances. These things she had studied in her Career training, but it was one of those things that seemed to be more organic, that she couldn't learn in a classroom or from Kobaloi. There was just something about an alliance that reeked of a real relationship, and as she knew first hand, those came into existence and winked out without anyone understanding why.
She settled into one of the abandoned armchairs, a handful of almonds in her hand. It was dinner, and it was a little more calories than she wanted, but she'd only thought about that after she'd taken them. So, she crunched each one, ground it into her back molars before swallowing. The cameras moved quickly between the tributes now, tracking the new alliances, followed the quatrain of boys as they headed northeast. She was by no means alone in the square, but it had quieted considerably. Enough so that she could look around and actually identify people around her.
Another girl her age, a Career, looked like she was sticking it out as well. Duchess offered her a flash of a smile, and then looked back at the screen. Midas was there now, and she waited until it cut away to Charas and Sawyer before she looked again to Brooklyn. This time, Duchess waved her over, indicating the chair at her side.
