Cause baby you're a firework, come on show 'em what you're worth
make 'em go, oh, oh, oh
It had been awhile since the Victor had blown through District Two, and it was awhile yet to go until the 60th Games. That made for something of a lull in the Career district, and Duchess hated it. She lived for the high of the reaping, the low of not being chosen, and the jealousy that made her burn as she watched the tributes from Two die one after the other. It had been so long since they had a Victor, and that had become a personal affront - a vendetta, even - for Duchess. She was rapidly running out of time to bring glory to her family, her friends, but she would not give up until that very last reaping.
Duchess walked through the town square frequently as it lay between her house and the training center. She loved it, for the beauty of the architecture and the stories that unfolded on the steps of the Mayor's house. It was a clear winter's evening, the sort that would suddenly fall into darkness without any warning at all. She hadn't intended to stop, but it didn't seem to matter if she was a little more late for dinner. She could always blame Kobaloi, her aunt who mentored and trained her for the Games.
The Mayor's house was lit warmly from within, which contrasted with the stark stone exterior. The Grants were among the wealthiest in the district, but they weren't a part of the highest echelons of Two's society, because of their business. It bothered Duchess sometimes, but she had clearly risen above the name. Duchess was, without a doubt, the most well known girl in school, even if she wasn't the most well liked.
But to live as the Mayor's daughter - now that would be just to her liking.
She lingered a few more minutes, gloved hands inside of her puffy jacket pockets. With a wistful shake of her blonde layers, Duchess turned towards the sunset. As per usual, she felt chatty, and wished more of the Careers lived in the same part of the city as she did. It was always so lonely walking home alone. A quick once-over of the square told her that she had some peers among those moving briskly home. She picked one she thought reasonably good looking, and turned so that she would intersect his path.
"Galax, right?" She grinned, because Duchess knew everyone's name -- it's what she did with those few precious free hours at home at night, instead of homework. "Care to keep a girl company on her walk home?"
