"Being alone isn't so bad as long as you like your own company."
Lilium Shlezar
Walking down the streets of the District Square isn’t too difficult for anybody, but if you’re albino, there is a astronomical difference between easy and uncomfortable. How would you feel if with every pace you took, there was another person shooting you a dirty, yet curious look? Like they were seeing somebody who hadn’t bathed for months on end? You would probably feel pretty uneasy about going outside. Lilium, however was no exception to such feeling, and the curious looks were always directed at her, with thoughts of What’s wrong with her? Why is her skin and hair white? Are her eyes… red?
The looks didn’t stop as she hesitantly advanced around the District Square, intending to pick up something for her small family to eat that night. She was given a ten and told to go get some chicken or whatever else she could find, but to be honest, Lilium didn’t exactly want to get anything. If she did, she would have to return home, and that was a place that she didn’t want to be. Even though she tried to believe that she belonged there, her mind couldn’t tie the knot on that thought process. That was a place where she could feel the annoyed glances of her non-albino parents whenever she walked by. That was a place where she could hear the silent hisses when she was in the room. Even if it was her only place to go and she was with people who (she at least thinks) love her, she felt like she should belong in that house. But, how would you feel, going home and then wondering if you walked into the wrong building? Even if you recognized the furniture and the people?
Sooner or later, though, she knew she would have to obtain some sort of sustenance for her family, or else her parents would have a serious word with her if she returned without. Well, what were you doing? We gave you our money, and we expected you to spend it on food. Lilium slightly rolled her eyes as the expected words crossed her mind. And they would speak even harsher because it’s me. If it was anybody else, they would only get a small scolding.
Before she even noticed it, she was three stores away from a foreign foods shop that seemed to beckon her; like a ghost to a haunted house. Lilium wasn’t sure if it was just because her stomach made noises of hunger or not, but the place seemed like it was the place to go for some good food. Noodles should be good. Everybody likes noodles…
As she kicked up her sneakers and allowed her nose to track down the scent, Lilium noticed a figure – about her size - out of the corner of her red eyes. Snapping out of her food-hunting mode, her head snapped over to where the brown haired girl was. At first, she recognized the girl as Kai, a girl she befriended at school. But she was slightly deterred by the helmet and get-up, but at the time, she didn’t question it. She just took it as ‘oh, my friend is in the alley.’ I wonder why Kai is here…
Moving her feet up the direction of the alley, she went up to the girl who she thought was Kai and tapped her on the shoulder, a cheery look taking claim on her pure white face. “Hey Kai! Whatcha doing here? And… just wondering Kai, why are you dressed like that? It looks nice, but I didn’t think you owned clothes like that…”
