Ama Hotchkins, The Capitol

Ama is a tall and thin young man of about twenty-five years of age. He has a somewhat pinched-looking, pale face with dark eyes and hair. His nose is rather long and pointed. Ama is a fashionista who dresses to perfection and never looks out of place. His pale skin is often contrasted with the luxurious black garments he wears. Black is his favorite color, and he wears it nearly constantly. To look at, he seems very introverted and shy, but when he talks, his eyes light up and he becomes a very forceful person.

His fastidious persona, however, contrasts with an inner fighting spirit and devil-may-care attitude. He is known to get into spirited bar fights and emerge, usually victorious, but with much damage done to his clothes and hair. Sometimes his tall, distinguished figure looks anything but fastidious with torn and dirty clothing, and a bloody and wild-eyed face. It is not uncommon to see him covered with bruises, although they are carefully concealed beneath layers of makeup. The fortunate thing for Ama is, since he is so tall, the fighters cannot reach his face very well, so the concentration of bruises there is very low.

Ama is a proud and longstanding citizen of the Capitol, trusts the president, and looks down slightly on all of the Districts. He thinks of himself and other Capitol residents as more sophisticated, more brilliant, and infinitely more artistic than the Districts. That said, he does appreciate the Districts, knowing that the Capitol would be nowhere without its Districts.

One feature of his personality is his love of fighting, and fighters. He believes that a conflict brings out the best in some people, and the worst in others. Ama is always ready for conflict. At first, his family was shocked when he repeatedly got into fights, but they learned to accept this as part of his personality. He enjoys the Games, admiring the fighting spirit of some of the tributes, but although he is kind of appalled by the violence permitted and encouraged between the youth of Panem in the Hunger Games, he chalks it down to the wisdom of the President in dealing with potential rebels.

His one major flaw is his own pride. It debilitates him, forces him into situations he doesn't want or choices he shouldn't make, portrays him as a snobbish upper-crust lounge lizard. He is violently proud of his family, and any real or imagined slight against them, the capitol, or his own self will cause him to pick a fight with anyone. He has a very high opinion of his own abilities, and cannot be stopped from taking a dare. When he is not affected by his pride, Ama is actually a warm and friendly young man who enjoys a good fight and sympathizes with, or at least appreciates, the downtrodden of Panem.

Ama comes from a line of Capitol Hotchkinses. In fact, they were, according to legend, one of the founding families of Panem. Since the early days, they have eschewed politics in favor of art, and any Hotchkins who turns out un-arty is looked down on. The Hotchkinses have produced many famous and skilled artists, from movie producers to painters. Ama is a skilled stylist, who relishes the artistic challenges.

The Hotchkins family was one of the few families who didn't partake in the Revolution, which is a source of extreme family pride. Any Hotchkins feels perfectly justified in looking down on anyone in Panem, especially the districts, because the chances are they partook in that conflict. To a Hotchkins, dissenting with the Government on any point is a major offense, and minor Hotchkinses, ones by marriage or cousins, can easily be disowned if they transgress.

Ama's personal history is very brief and boring. All his life, Ama has lived a privileged life. A big house in the Capitol, access to premier luxuries, and never starved, never hungry for that matter. Since moving out on his own a little, he has gotten to know the dark side of life in Panem a little bit. After several years of private practice as a hair and clothes stylist in the Capitol, he took a job as a stylist's assistant for the Hunger Games, making sure his charges look their best, and trying to encourage them. Working for the Hunger Games has been an eye-opener into the darker aspects of life in the Districts, and threatens his serene Capitol viewpoint.
