Does, Says, Thinks
Only the near-silent padding of her own footsteps greeted Kiar's ears as she made her way towards the electric fence that encircles District twelve. In truth, a better name for it would be the-fence-that-is-supposed-to-be-electrified-but-the-District-is-too-poor-to-keep-it-that-way, but it still worked, more-or-less at keeping people in and other animals out. She smirked at the thought. It hadn't stopped her from sneaking out every so often to gather some berries, or swim in the nearby lake, and she had never been caught. The Peacekeepers around District weren't very strict, but every once in a while they would exact harsh measurements on small events to remind people that they still have the power to do so. So far, she had been lucky enough to avoid such situations, but she supposed it was only a matter of time until her wanderings caught up with her.
Inwardly shrugging, she continued to make her way towards the nearest hole in the fence, but paused. She had heard something, a soft step. She scanned the area around her, trying to find its source, but found nothing. Shaking her head, she went to take a step forward when she thought she saw something out of the corner of her eye. Oh great, all this thinking of Peacekeepers had given her paranoia, just perfect. She growled at herself, annoyed that she would give in to such a stupid fear. Peacekeepers rarely ever came over here, and usually only when prompted. Besides, she had been sure that no one had been following her when she had left.
Having an idea, she turned to the right and walked for a little bit, then ran. After nearly twenty strides, she turned fully around and ran back twenty strides. If anyone was following her, they would just think she was here to run. She closed her eyes, using her paces to dictate when to change direction. She sighed and slowed, her eyes still closed, continuing to walk forward a few paces before stopping abruptly. She looked to her left, towards the fence, then to the right, back towards the houses. Seeing the area clear, she was about to turn and go over to the fence when, WHAM! She let out a grunt as something, or someone ran into her, knocking the air from her lungs. She growled, trying to regain her breath. What the hell was that?
