The silence was overwhelming. All alone… Only a short time ago had Jana met Killian, and then watched him die. She watched someone else die, and didn’t do much of anything to stop it from happening. That guilt is what had kept her up all night. Seeing his face in the sky haunted her. It was as if the Capitol was broadcasting her own failure back at her. Why hadn’t she done anything? Because she was useless. In these Games her only talent was avoiding death at the cost of others. Not once during the Blood Bath had she been attacked. Not once during the fight from yesterday had a weapon touched her. Only the healing wound on her arm reminded her that she’d been in any danger at all. None of the other tributes seemed to even realize she was alive and well. Despite having little in the way of injuries, and a decent supply of things, the redhead was still not a challenger for the title of victor. She’d known it all along. Quite honestly how she’d even made it this far was beyond her comprehension. The sleepless night had been completely unproductive. Not even leaving the cornucopia. Not enough energy to care about what waiting around here could bring. Try to sleep in the mouth of the golden horn had brought little in the way comfort. The sand scratched and irritated Jana to no end. There wasn’t anything like this sand back home. It was dry and constantly shifting. Then there was that strange shock wave. It hadn’t hurt so much as it scared her. The seventeen year old probably leaped four feet straight into the air when it hit. Some sort of comic relief for the Capitol…
The dryness of the sand left her mouth feeling the same way. It had taken Jana a moment to remember that she had boiled water back before Killian was dead… All of the memories before today Jana tried to dump out of her mind. They meant nothing now. Carefully brining the jug up to her mouth she began to drink slowly, only to end up gulping the whole thing down in a matter of moments. Really she had not realized how thirsty she was. Other things had taken priority over worrying about herself. Every move she made she had to consciously think about it. Time to eat. Your need to drink now. It’s time to rest. Things she would normally say to a small child like Ayane, she was now saying in her own mind just to get through the day. The thought of the small girl yanked viciously on her heart strings. Was she watching the Games? Had she seen her caretaker fail to do anything to help a dying friend? What was going to happen to her when Jana died? All these question she had no answer to. Would most likely never have an answer to. Looking up at the sky a vague thought popped into her head. Were the cameras watching her now? Most likely no. There was bound to be something more exciting than a single girl sitting in the sand, looking terribly confused.
How she didn’t see it coming with nothing but sand all around Jana didn’t know. But she could hear a distinct growling sound from behind her. Flailing desperately, she grabbed her knife and struggled to her feet. Sand flew in all directions. Forest green eyes widened at the sight of the mutt. It was a cat of some sort. Only bigger, stronger, more terrifying, and with a distinct desire to kill her. The little knife in her hand seemed to be a joke compared to the claws and teeth that adorned the big cat. ”Nice kitty… You’re a good kitty cat.” Reasoning with a mutt would have no effect, but treating it like a common house cat somehow made the task of fighting it seem a little more manageable. Only difference was if it was a house cat she could drown it or break its neck with no trouble. This beast would not take kindly to either of those ideas. She would need a miracle to be able to kill it even with a weapon like a sword. Fighting with a knife seemed hopeless. But then again, her situation in these Games had always been hopeless. Lacking all finesse of a seasoned fighter the small framed girl closed her eyes and lashed out at the mutt with her feeble blade.
