MAGGIE OAKSON
O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
and waning;
hateful life.
First oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.
"Sto-op!" I yell behind me, tripping on someone's trash. My voice cracks more and more often nowadays. Philly's chasing me, and she knows I stand no chance. Scrambling back up, she catches me, and laughingly tugs on my hair. Reaching back, I find her, and whirl around. "Stop!" I yell again, and I feel her back up. Oh goodness, not again! I helplessly listen as she runs off, leaving me in the chilly, late-afternoon air. She's done it again. Chased me to the edge of the woods, then run off so I would come home so late I'd be grounded and given a lecture. I can hear voices, and people leaving near me, so I'm guessing this is one of the ones were people work.
People brush by me, ignoring me for the most part. "Uh, excu-use me?" I keep asking, but people keep going. I'm upset, I don't recognize any voices, and nobody is coming to me. I feel my way around, and run into a tree. OH GOODNESS. I rub my head, and feel the tree. "Stu-upid tree!" I yell, and kick it. "Oww!" I yell a bit louder, and sit down to rub my foot. I wonder what I must look like. I pull myself up using a low branch, and sigh. Noise has ceased so fast. I hear footsteps though. Who's footsteps?
I turn my ear toward the sound. "Who is the-ere?" I ask, and clear my throat. Maybe whoever it is can help me home. I sure do hope so, I hate being outside at night, when everyone is gone. I didn't even remember to bring Ted! Ted is my bear, and he always gives me good advice. "You have to spea-eak, I can't see you." I say. What help will anyone be if they are motioning for me to get up? Good a time as ever to let it be known I won't see the person. It's pretty akward when they catch you looking at something odd. Like a dead rat.

Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me!
