Just as the sun was beginning to rise on District 7, so did Reid. He had always been able to wake up before the sun. Some called this a gift, others a curse. He could honestly care less. All he wanted to do was get over this pathetic living space he called a house on the outskirts of 7. Society had shunned him out of the square almost as fast as his family had. But he was used to living in solitude. His days were filled with the usual: Reading. That was practically all he did, because well that was all he could do. No one would hire him because no one trusted him with an ax. So he usually found a nice tree to sit under and read while the sun shined overhead.
He knew that practically every citizen of the district knew about him and how he acted, even when he didn't know how he was acting. But it became normal to say hello to anyone that passed by or give a gentle smile or wave. But overall, he had no one to talk to and he was pushed into submission most of the time by the crazed personality of Kelly. Kelly was just a teen-aged girl who wished that she could have the fun that Reid had been missing out on when he was a teen.
She dreamed about what it must be like going into the games and having to fight others who were twice your size and strength. But for as long as she could remember, she had been 16. Reid would age but she wouldn't. She was stuck with him, closer than glue.
Reid grabbed his battered copy of Geniuses of the ages and headed out toward the work area to see all the workers change shift. Reid was not young, he was not a teen. No, Reid was twenty four years of age. Not that anyone cared really, no one was around to celebrate his birthday, and why would he want to celebrate getting older? No one would ever want him. No one ever wants to hang out with a crazy.
Reid had not had a decent conversation with someone for a long while and it made him mad. He hadn't spoken words to another person in a long while and he felt that he was going insane, but he knew that that had already happened. He just wanted to have one friend. One that he could actually talk to that did not care about the fact that there was someone else controlling him the majority of the time. Not many seemed to see past that fact.
Reid fixed his glasses before glancing at the sun. It burned in the sky and the heat touched all in its grasp. Reid had to roll up his sleeves before the heat got to him. He settled against a tree trying to get comfortable under the minimal shade. He would occasionally look up to say hi to the passerby who was leaving or going to work, but other than that he was engrossed in his book.
Reid had no purpose. He had no job to get to. No school to attend. No one to please but himself, but he couldn't even do that. With a huff, he took off his glasses and slumped lower near the trunk of the tree, trying to catch a few z's without having to worry about Kelly. Although he had no idea who this Kelly was, he knew that many people did not enjoy her company and he knew that if he ever had the opportunity to meet her, he would not like her as well because she was the one that did this to him. He snuggled into himself more and closed his eyes slightly, unsure of what was to come.
