Rayne rolled over in his bunk as he planted his head beneath his pillow. The newly fallen spring snow had no ill effect on the rooster who began his morning regiment of waking everyone on the farm. After several minutes of the awful cackling Rayne was sitting up at the side of the bed rubbing his eyes into focus. Another day on the farm as always started before the warmth of the sun has had its chance to frighten away night’s cold dark tentacles. Rayne yawned as his stretched his arms above his head; the daily routine soon began with pulling on one’s breeches and shirt then swiftly followed with a quick stop at the privy.
Before Rayne even arrived at the kitchen the aroma of breakfast was already reaching him. It was Sunday which meant a strip or two of bacon along with the regular mainstays of biscuits and if the chickens cooperated, an egg or two. Rayne met his mother at the stove and offered her a good morning kiss on the cheek, a routine he steered clear of if his brothers were around, it only led to needless ribbing the rest of the morning. Rayne fetched a plate and slid into a seat at the table as the first rays of sunlight began to warm the room.
Rayne’s two older brothers have been off on a cattle round up the last couple of weeks and weren’t due back for at least another one. As he dug into his morning meal Rayne could tell by the empty plates on the table that his father and granddad had already eaten and were off to an early start tending the farm. As for his sisters, mom let them sleep in on Sundays while she did their chores of gathering the eggs and milk; it was a special treat her own mother used to afford her and she loved keeping that one family tradition alive.
