Personality:
Nitya is 5’2” and one of the shortest members of her family. Her height mostly comes from her legs which are toned and quite strong from all the swimming she does as well as the running for her family’s fish business and her other odd jobs. Her feet are a little bigger than she would like, and she has a few scars on them from cutting herself on rocks and other debris under the water that she works in, and they are pretty callused as well. She weighs 110 pounds, is slender, and looks pretty scrawny up top, and that fools most people. She is actually toned and has very strong arms from lugging fish. It just doesn’t look that way unless she actively tenses her arm. Nitya really hates that her arms look that way; being underestimated for it annoys her since she tries to keep herself in shape. She can lift at least 100 pounds.
For some reason, even though she is constantly out in the sun, her skin has stayed pretty fair; she looks white with just a hint of a tan in certain lights. Of course, since she is fair skinned, it means that she gets burned a lot, but she doesn’t complain about it. She just wishes that she could be a little darker though she doesn’t really admit that to anybody. Sometimes she’ll smudge a little mud on to make sure that she doesn’t burn since certain areas if burned won’t allow her to work to her potential.
Outside the scars on her feet, she has another that starts at her left shoulder blade and goes at a diagonal for about two inches. She was being careless around the various fishing spears and managed to knock a few over and caught one along her back. It might have healed properly, but she hadn’t wanted to tell her parents in case they had stopped her from working. Her skin is usually clear except for some freckles along her arms and a few just barely noticeable under her eyes. However, she does sustain injuries once in a while consisting of scratches and bruises from the fishing jobs.
Overall, she doesn’t view herself as being pretty. She views herself as rather ordinary looking. Her black hair is usually worn up and out of her face; the only time she really wears it down is when her mother cuts it to keep it out of her way. After that she thinks she looks a bit boyish. Her eyes are her most expressive part, but they are an ordinary dark brown color. She often wishes she had green. The only thing she really likes about herself is how quick (both with her hands and on her feet) and strong she is after working around fish and boats all her life. She also has a pretty good eye and is fairly good with a spear.
As far as clothing is concerned, Nitya is not that concerned with fashion or looking cute. She wears what is comfortable and what is functional. The only time she dresses up is when her mother makes her or when she is getting ready for the reaping. She prefers to wear lighter colors so that she won’t be too hot. Usually she sports a sleeveless top or a simple t-shirt and some kind of shorter bottoms. Anything too heavy and she would have trouble functioning in the water.
Nitya has many different facets to her personality. To those that don’t know her well, she seems a bit dark, very confident, and a little scary. She is known for flashing dark looks and acting stand offish in large social situations. However, that part of her is simply a mask that she puts up so that people take her seriously; it’s also a bit of a defense mechanism. It’s a mixture of her desire to not be underestimated and also in some situations a mask of fear. She isn’t always the way that she appears on the exterior though.History:
Under the rather rough exterior, she is actually very different. She cares deeply about people she is close with such as her family, and if you talk to her she is actually quite friendly unless you talk to her in a large group. Large groups (ten or more) are either intimidating or are places where people often underestimate her. She is not fond of either feeling, so that is when her mask comes out. Other than that, she will talk to you and joke around. She enjoys laughter and having fun. While she does not trust people easily, she does like to make friends. Once you have her trust, you will have it unless you do something to break it like attack her family or something like that. She is extremely loyal and will seek vengeance if you hurt those she loves. Nitya is also a bit of a romantic but nobody save her family knows this. She isn’t too much for letting her “mushy” emotions show.
Nitya is stubborn to the point where it can be a detriment. This is not in her beliefs but in her goals. When she has something that she wants, it is very hard to keep her from stopping. It doesn’t matter if it is literally unachievable, she will keep going. She has gotten hurt because of that before. Of course, that also enters in with pride. She also doesn’t ask for help; she will accept it if it is offered of the other person’s free will, but she will not ask. At times it is hard even to tell if she needs help because she is so determined to look strong in other people’s eyes.
There is also the rather “crazy” portion of her personality. Usually she has a very even emotion level, but you don’t want to get her angry or make her depressed. They are two sides of the spectrum. Make her angry and she is a raging volcano. Though she can usually get away in time before doing any real damage, should you pursue when she’s that mad you may get something thrown at you. Usually she just does damage to her own things. That’s what happens if you make her angry about something personal or if you hurt one of her friends or family members. If you just said she can’t do something or that she should give up, it just makes her more determined about the goal. The opposite side is when you make her depressed. If she is extremely sad and depressed, she just shuts off. She will go through the motions of living, but there will be nothing inside it. It can be hard to get her out of that state; she usually just has to work through it.
She has a good head on her shoulders; she knows how to read and write, and she always had good marks in school. There are subjects that she doubts her ability in and that aren’t as strong as the others, but she is still fairly intelligent. However, she does not flaunt it because she knows that there are others out there smarter than her. She just looks at it as a challenge when she meets them. She can be a bit competitive. Outside of that, she also has a love for music and art. They aren’t things that she has much if any time for, but she does appreciate them.
Concerning the Capitol, Nitya has no real hate toward them. She hates the Hunger Games as she’s seen a friend or two die in them, but she is not really a rebel against the Capitol. Though there are times that she wishes she could get away from part of the life she leads, she realizes that is not an option for her. However, if given the right circumstances she could change her mind should the well-being of her family be threatened or if it is for a cause that she truly believes in.
Nitya is the youngest of what would have been five children born to Melina and Valirion Demont. There are not many memories from the earliest part of her childhood, but she knows that she and her siblings were always working, having fun, or sleeping. Of course, the work was nothing like what her family does as an actual job, but they were jobs around the house or sometimes on boats like cleaning. All of her siblings are boys, and from that she got her tomboy like nature. She was always a little girly, but as a child she definitely preferred playing with the boys than doing any girly thing. She has three older brothers named Hammil (22), Titus (21), and Gauis (19). She also used to have a twin named Indigo, but we’ll get to that later.Codeword: odair
As a child, Nitya never really thought about their family situation. They always had food, and they always had a place to sleep. There were times when they were cold and times when life seemed hard, but it was hard in a way that a child sees it. Both her parents worked, and her mother did the housework besides. Still, she always had her siblings to play with while her parents were gone. Overall, she had a happy childhood. During this time, her parents taught them about boats, fish, and other water related things in addition to the school work they were required to do. Of course, her parents taught her other things as well such as about music and art. While none of it meant much to her at the time, she kept in her mind.
As the years went by, all of the siblings helped out with the family’s work in fish and maintaining boats. Nitya also started to help out with keeping the house in order and cooking meals. In addition, they went to school where Nitya made good marks and made friends. However, she was still closest to her family. Of course, she was extremely close to her twin, Indigo. The two were hardly seen apart. Anyway, as she grew, she was becoming more aware of her family situation. While they were not poor, they still depended entirely on the business to get through which meant that any help that could be given was an asset. That was why at least one if not all of the siblings would be working as soon as school work was done. Unfortunately, that is also how the family lost Indigo.
It happened when Nitya was thirteen. Indigo had finished his work before the rest and had gone to help out and do what he could for his father and mother. The next thing she knew, her mother was telling her that Indigo had been killed in some sort of spear accident. The whole family was in mourning, but Nitya was hit extremely hard. She and Indigo had been best friends, and now he was gone. It was too much for her to handle, so she simply shut off. She worked, went to school, and did everything that she would normally do, but there was no feeling. Her eyes looked almost dead, and nobody could reach her. Fortunately, the Reaping happened within a few weeks which shook her out of her depressed state when she realized there was a chance that she could lose one of her other brothers. Luckily, this was not the case.
Although she acts fine, Nitya often thinks of Indigo and still carries something of his with her at all times. The years passed and she watched as two of her friends died in one of the Hunger Games. It seemed so senseless. She also started noticing boys in a more different way. While she has had attractions, she’s never really had one be interested in her. Now, she does what she always has. She works with her family and tries to make sure that they are happy; she sees friends, and she dabbles a little at art using what she can find on the beach and on boats. While she is not eager, if chosen for the Hunger Games, she will compete as hard as she can.
