Camellia Vilanelle
Camellia took a deep, shaky breath before stepping outside. She hated when her father acted like this, when he goes on rampages for no reason. But it was better that she dealt with it than either of her brothers. They had no patience for the old man. And she could hardly blame them. They worked hard every day in the coal mines to be able to pay for food for the family, and the last thing they wanted to come home to was their father's constant fussing.
Camellia asked herself whether her father was more tolerable when he was complaining, or when he was silent as stone. She personally preferred the loudness, somehow the silence seemed so much worse, like he didn't have any life left in his frail body. But she knew her brothers welcomed the moments when their father refused to open his mouth. Shaking her head slightly, Camellia walked out of the front door, closing it gently behind her, so as not to give her father something more to gripe about.
She walked lazily through The Seam, greeting those she passed with a warm smile. The late winter chill made her shiver, and she pulled her frayed jacket tighter around her. Her stomach growled, but she took no mind to it. She rubbed her hands together and watched as her breath came out in thin ribbons of air. She wondered where Aster was. Knowing him, he was probably searching for her right now. She rolled her eyes at the thought. She's sixteen, plenty old enough to take care of herself. But he watches her like a hawk, always delving into her personal life (not that she had much of one as it is). He wouldn't even let her start collecting tesserae!
She blew hot air into her hands and looked around. The area seemed pretty dead. She didn't even think to check the time before leaving, but judging by the dark grayness of the sky she figured it must be getting late. But she didn't want to go home quite yet. Sighing, she walked on, kicking up dirt with every step.
