Kai wiped the sweat from his brow as the sun just began to rise over the meadows and fields. The golden hue that came from the crops always put a small grin on Kai's face, the beauty it gave to the residents of District 11 always filled them with a few moments of Serenity. Unfortunately for Kai and his younger brother and sister, Aiden and Rose, these few moments were always cut short by a vile person.
A quick smack to the back of Kai's head with a shovel quickly destroyed the serenity in his mind, which was now filled with excruciating pain and ringing. Aiden and Rose twitched as the sound of metal again bone and quickly went back to harvesting and planting new seeds in the ground. Kai reached for the back of his head, which was already still recovering from yesterday's injuries. Dried blood was now covered in a fresh splotch of blood.
"Bastard..." He muttered under his breath as the world was still spinning, barely able to tell where his brother and sister was which killed him. His step-brother had taken over the farm after his father caught a sudden illness and passed away. Kai barely managed on his own, and he needed his vile step-brother to keep up with all the work.
As Kai stumbled to his feet, a fresh pain emerged from his stomach as a splash of blood came from his mouth. His step-brother had struck a blow to his stomach, his second favorite place to strike him. Kai grunted and fell to the ground. His younger brother came running but Kai held out a hand.
"Get back to work Aiden... Now!!!" He barely had the strength to breath let alone talk, but he was the wall of protection of his younger siblings. He wiped the blood from his lips and got to his knees while his older step-brother stared intently at him, a thick cloud of hate came over the farm as he turned away. The cold brown eyes were always watching him, the eyes of someone who managed to get through the Reaping every year.
Kai had faced the past 4 Reapings with his name being placed more every year. It was either that or starve to death on the small farm. His step-brother managed all the finances and their farm was too small to support everyone on it, so he would tell Kai to make t he trade, food for more names in the glass bowl. His younger brother Aiden was turning 12 this year and would also be capable of making the trade and joining the Reaping. He always had to keep a close eye on him to make sure he would not be foolish enough to make the trade.
"Kai, get your lazy ass up and run into town." Town was a 4 mile run from their home, "We need more seeds and supplies..."
It was time to make the trade...
Without saying anything he walked over to his younger brother and sister and hugged them tight. They both knew what was going to happen and it became a ritual. Kai never believed in this concept of luck, although he always believed in fate.
"I'll be back you two, and tonight we can sleep with full stomachs..." he whispered to both of them. His step-brother started coming over and Kai kissed them both on the forehead and starting jogging onto the main dirt road. It was going to be a long run...
