Dog and I had been practicing all year for this. It was finally time to go out into the woods together and ride like the wind. All the sounds that frightened Dog before had all disappeared into the dust. Holding the reins I pulled around and stood him to the front of the fence. "Ready boy?" I whispered while patting his mane. He pulled he head back in return. I stood up slightly, my feet lightly pressuring the horse's sides. I pressed down harder as the speed increased. Ever since I had gotten Dog he was quite fast for me. My heart started racing as we approached the large barb-wired fence. Would we make it? I didn't know but there was no stopping back now. Whoosh! We had made it over into the woods!
The air seemed sweeter here and it was so different from district 10. I could stay here forever. I looked up and the trees towered over me. My blond hair would give me away at any moment but it was such a nice spot. I looked down at Dog's mane once more and pet it. "Nice job Dog, really nice job," This time my voice was a bit louder and was more confident. At least now I could maybe go hunting or look for another wild horse. Maybe even meet a new friend. All seemed so nice. Hoping off Dog I touched the moist ground on my bare feet. I looked around and hopped back on, going deeper into the forest.
The farther I went the less familiar the smell. The air was now stale and was filled with what I thought was coal. Must be District 12 I thought to myself since I had been taught this in school. Looking around I found a nice clearing. The smell wasn't as agonizing and the trees were large enough to cover both me and Dog from any visitors. I repeated the words that soar through my head "I will go see mother and Deric today. It will be a nice surprise," I said as they were still alive but they weren't. I could get some beautiful wildflowers from nature and put them at Deric or Mother's grave. All the flowers I had placed on them last week might have blown away or are dead.
I stood up and tied Dog to a tree. Bending over I picked out the prettiest flowers I could find, Goldenrods. They were once a flower of the states before the war. That state was Kentucky. I closed my eyes and listened to the birds when I heard a voice. I couldn't make out the words but my slowed heart starting pounding like it did when I was to get over the fence. I ran to the tree I tied Dog toand untangled the mess of a knot. Hopping on I didn't ride far till I came to another clearing. Only this time the surprise wasn't to pleasent. There lay a blue with dark, long silky hair and baggy clothing. His eyes were a lumious brown. He didn't seem to strong and looked around 16. Would I be able to take him? Might as well try.[/color]
