Does, Thinks, Says, Hears
I had made it to the orphanage finally, but since it was raining there wasn't anything to do that hadn't already been assigned earlier. I had left for the market at that time so I escaped any real chores. As I stepped inside, Rodger was wriggling to get free, so I set him down and watched him go running off somewhere. I proceeded down the hall until I got to the usual chipped corner of the hall that leads to the kitchen. I left the vegetables I bought earlier on the counter. No one was around, so I went ahead and rushed to the beds.
I decided to hang out in there for the rest of the day. Reading the only two comic books, for the three hundred and seventy fifth time, I've ever owned. But, who's keeping count? "The Death of Superman" and "The Amazing Spiderman" two of the few things my parents left me.
Before I knew it, it was dark and the other orphans were coming to bed. By now, I was lying down and attempting to fall asleep. Sadly though, despite my best attempts, I could not fall asleep. However, not because it would never stay quiet for even 10 minutes, or because of the horrid smell some of the orphans let off, or the constant yelling and smashing of things that went on downstairs when the headmaster was drunk. No, none of these things kept me up. I was used to them by now. What did keep me up tonight was my imagination. The memories that I didn't know if I was making up or not. I was trying to see if Mallory was real or not. I didn't know if I really knew her or just really wanted to know her, for lack of companionship over the years. All I knew for now though, I'm going to see her tomorrow. She ended up being the last thing on my mind before I fell asleep. I don't ever remember closing my eyes, all I remember are her calming and sincere eyes helping me fall asleep.
I woke with a start, feeling sun on my face, and jumped out of bed before anyone else. I noticed some hadn't slept at all, still whimpering like they had been the night before. Those children ignored me though. Most usually won't care if they see you sneaking out. Although, we have had sellouts before. Thinking they would be rewarded, be seen in good favor by the Headmaster. But, they wouldn't. They would be treated just the same, some even beaten for tattling.
I pulled on a ratty, v-neck vest. It was red, well a very worn out red. I've owned it for quite some time now, so it was washed out from the sun. I then grabbed my black pants, picking up both of my sandals in my right hand and started on my way out of the building. Hopping over sleeping bodies and slipping and shuffling across walls. I finally made it downstairs and went to the kitchen, snatching an apple before heading out. I've always loved eating apples, ever since I was little.
I stepped outside, making sure to close the door slowly. Once I heard the last click though, I turned on a dime. Sprinting like a mutt was after me. I could feel the dirt and rocks hit my back as I ran. It felt good to stretch my legs. I finally made it closer to town, so I slowed down to a stop and slipped my sandles on. I continued walking as I began looking for the bakery. A lot of people were out setting up shop for the day. Everyone except the baker. I assume they don't open till later. I guess I hadn't noticed that before. So I waited. I sat down in the grass and continued to eat my apple.
