A stone skipped across the surface of the water. With each bounce, the stone created ripples that distorted the image of the afternoon sun reflecting upon the surface. Fabian Ruins against his favorite tree and emitted a sigh of content. Its various branches shielded him from the sun’s powerful, constantly seeking rays, granting him a few moments to savor the tranquility and relaxation. On an average hour of the day, Fabian was the sun’s main victim. It poured its heat onto him like a waterfall as he labored upon his parent’s farm, sweating through tattered shirts and smearing dirt into his jeans. The sun was normally his most despised enemy, although in the morning, it was also the signal of a new day. A symbol of hope. What he hoped for was his family’s safety and the completion of a day‘s work. Working was no difficult task for him. On the contrary, it was a compulsive addiction.[/blockquote]
His younger siblings were not too fond of his behavior. They constantly labeled him a ‘workaholic’, making comments on the bags that had etched themselves into the skin under his eyes and the sore status of his muscles. Diligent work left him impressively built, but with every movement he ached in practically every area. He was accustomed to the feeling, though. When Fabian accepted the responsibilities of the family, sacrifices had to be made. His siblings did not approve of his sacrificing his well being, but their complaints did not sway him.
After much coaxing and pleading, his siblings had persuaded him to take some time off. They assured him that they would keep up with the work while he was away, and although he did not doubt them for a second, his anxiety grew at each passing minute. Could his siblings truly handle his work load? Their entire family, excluding his handicapped father, was assigned a list of duties. Fabian’s was the lengthiest. The children had their own designated lists, and he began to wonder if they had the capabilities of handling the combination of their labor and his own. The thoughts left him restless beneath the otherwise comforting tree.
Releasing yet another sigh, Fabian stood up and wiggled out of his shirt. At the moment it was drenched in perspiration and stained with filth. The odd odor emitting from it caused him to wrinkle his nose in distaste. He quickly stood up and approached the water’s edge. He kicked off his shoes and slowly waded into the gentle waters of the pond until the surface reached his knees. Bending over slightly, he dipped the shirt into the water and massaged it between his hands, scrubbing loose pieces of dirt away. As soon as he was satisfied, he lifted it and squeezed the liquid out of it. He listened to the large droplets strike the surface, and in the process, felt the sun beating against his bare back. It was a welcoming sensation.
