The roads of District 10 had been covered in a chilling, hopeless layer of fog all day. Such a haunting presence, Filly felt; it was the perfect opportunity for her to venture out of the barn unnoticed. She didn’t bother putting on a jacket, just slipped out the door and into the cold. She welcomed the wind against her back, as it pushed her further and quicker down the path. I doubt anyone else is foolish enough to come outside in this kind of weather. Someone as foolish as Filly? That was almost unheard of.
The harsh weather, Filly hoped, meant that she was less likely to be noticed. She doubted the appearance of a lone fifteen year old girl hanging out in the square would go over well with Peacekeepers, so she kept to the rural areas just outside her home. She was usually content to wander just under a few hundred yards from her home. Perhaps it was the weather, or just the lack of stimulation being so close to home, but for some reason Filly felt obligated to take her walk a bit further that day.
The road was empty, what was there to be afraid of? She stole a glance back at the comforting silhouette of her barn, standing alone in the distance. Why had she been so convinced to go out in this horrible weather? She could have stayed home and cuddled up with one of the horses. She did little to try to warm herself up. While most people had their arms wrapped around themselves, trekking quickly to escape such cold, Filly was rather relaxed in her cardigan and a pair of cropped pants. It'll be alright. If I see anyone, I'll just turn around and go the other way.
