i came just to see your beautiful face.
have you come to see mine?
Vaca moved the horse through the town, it's hooves making the steady clip-clop her father always said was to let other horses know where one of them was. The thought of her father was like a punch in the stomach, and Vaca inhaled sharply. She remembered everything about what he'd told her--about how horses could sense your emotions and they do the same emotions, about how a horse can be the best friend you ever will have, about how horses will never leave you, and so much more. One thing she will never forget in her entire life was watching her father die right before her very eyes.
It started out as a good day--one of the few their family had. Vaca and her parents had gone out and bought some bread and cheese after her father had worked the week. They had a good lunch, and their bellies were at least fuller than usual. Vaca's father was going to put on a bull riding show over the weekend just to earn a bit more money to feed their family. They had borrowed a massive, angry brown bull with long, dangerous horns. The first day went well, and Vaca and her parents were excited to earn more money over the weekend. But the next day something went horribly wrong. The bull was racing around the pen, throwing its body around in a rampage when Vaca's father got thrown off in the middle of the pen, too stunned to get up as the bull charged straight at him.
Vaca squeezed her eyes closed, muttering words only she could understand. Opening her icy blue eyes, she turned her horse around and moved him into a trot back toward her house, Kadie, her golden dog, loping to keep up. The sun was halfway above the horizon--the exact time Vaca was supposed to get up at to go to school. Arriving back at home, Vaca swung off her horse, said, "Good job, Sprite," and tied him to the fence before going back inside and putting her hair in a bun after it was in its messy, bed-hair state before.
"Mom, gotta go to school,"[/i] called Vaca, her singsong voice ringing through the house. A brown-haired lady walked out of a room, her green eyes sparkling. "Okay, have fun," she said, kissing Vaca on her light tan cheeks before handing her a paper bag with half a sandwich in it. Lunch. Nodding her head, the raven-black haired teen went back outside, mounted Sprite, and rode to her school.
Tying Sprite to the post designated for horses, Vaca sat down on the steps and waited for school to begin, arriving early as usual.[/font]
