Does, Says, Thinks, Hears
Thud. Nearly 50 pound bags of grain made a nasty thud as I dropped them on top of each other in our loft. Yesterday I had traveled to and from the market square ten times; I was riding one horse and ponying two others. I managed to get 21 sacks of grain back to the barn before nightfall and there was not enough time to put them in the loft before I had sleep. So today, in the sweltering heat, I had to take a pause from training again and move every bag up the stairs, into the loft.
Thud. The fifth bag was plopped down with another thud, but another noise followed after it that made me race downstairs. Hooves were pounding against the ground right outside the wall that separated the barn from the great pasture. I stuck my head out the door connected directly to the pasture and saw five of our mares, two with foals, looking carefully a way in the distance. I followed their gaze and saw a little pony with an even smaller rider approaching the barn. "Who is coming out here so early in the morning? Hell, who is coming out here at all?"
My answer come in the next moment when the pony picked up a jog and brought the rider into view. Oh, Fawn! A while back, I had offered a younger girl to come out and help with the horses, she said she had always wanted to work with them. Today was the best day she could have come out. Hope swirled through me and I smiled, moving around to the front of the barn. Hopefully I can just tell her what to do and she will be on her way. I can get all my work done today and the horses taken care of. As Fawn got within hearing range I called out a greeting, "Hey Fawn. We can put your pony in a stall in the side-barn, if you'd like."
