Metis was walking slowly down to the beach, her head buried in a book. She was reading about the various plants that you find on coastal areas, and she wanted to try and identify some for herself. The day was pleasant, but a little cold, so Metis had wrapped herself up snugly in a long skirt and a poncho. She enjoyed walking down the steep cliffs from her home in the lighthouse down to the water, so used to the journey that she didn't have to look where she was going.
She sun beat down on her face, reflecting off the white sand that was cool against her bare feet. Her legs took her straight to her favourite rock, where she sat down without once looking up from her book. The people swimming and playing around her were no distraction. Metis often spent her free time like this, reading or rock-climbing alone, as her friends often had to work. She didn't mind, she enjoyed the solitude, using the time to indulge herself with learning.
Sometimes, she wished she had someone to share this with. She wished she wasn't so shy so she could just go up to the group of kids swimming, and join them. But as long as they were there, she was going to stay on the beach, safe from the others where she couldn't embarass herself.
So absorbed in her book, Metis didn't notice the ball flying stright towards her head until it was too land. She bit her tongue as the ball smashed into her nose, leaving a bright red mark as she spat out the blood. Metis's heart dropped; she was mortified. Even sitting here she had managed to do something wrong. Metis picked up the ball and threw it back without looking were it was going. 'Sorry,' she said, feeling it was her fault despite having done nothing.
