He’d been staring at the ceiling above his bed for over an hour. He hadn’t even bothered getting dressed after washing up after returning home from work. He’d just draped a towel around himself and collapsed back into bed. The blanket of night was just beginning to creep across the sky and into the open window of his bedroom, accompanied by the normal sulfuric waft of air the people of District 3 breathed every day of their lives. He’d come to more or less enjoy the smell, taking a deep breath, letting it lightly sting the insides of his nostrils. The nearby factory must’ve been cranking out products faster than usual: he was so used to the smell that normally it didn’t affect him at all.
Shaking his head, Ajax finally rolled off the bed and onto his feet. After pulling on some clothes and grabbing a hooded coat, he clomped downstairs and had a few words with his mother and father before wandering out into the street. It hasn’t that he had a habit of wandering about in the evening time, but he did rather enjoy the time to himself, not to mention that the setting sun mixed with the polluted skies was quite a sight to behold and not at all as disgusting as it sounds.
After he walked a ways, he pulled on his coat and flipped up the hood, stuffing his fists down into the pockets. It was actually one of the warmer nights they’ve had as of late, although every so often a gust of wind would bring the temperature down slightly, as would the fast approaching night. Ajax took another deep breath before releasing it into a soft sigh as he trudged through the snow-dusted streets. It took a few more minutes for him to reach his destination: a lone bench, sculpted out of boxy pieces of metal. It was one of his favorite places to sit and one that few other people seemed to use. It was set up against a building (Ajax wasn’t sure what the building was exactly) and located on one of the wider streets in town. You could just see town square down the corner, so it was close enough to the ‘hustle and bustle’ without being right up in the middle of it.
Ajax trudged up to the bench and wiped a bit of snow off of it before sitting down. He settled in and leaned back, crossing his ankles and casting glances down both sides of the street. After he was satisfied, he lolled his head back against the wall behind him and closed his eyes, content for the moment to have some peace and quiet all to his own.
