Name: Jasper Louise Deckland

Age: 15

Personality: Quiet and suspicious, Jasper never really grows close to anyone. Her brain tells her they are all evil, come to make her life more miserable than it already is, but she knows it’s because she is afraid they’ll judge her for her disease. Fear and pain have always played a big part in her life, and the turmoil inside Jasper’s broken mind, body and spirit reflect outwardly. Her phantoms let her see the bad in people, and she is often filled with so much destructive hate that she is afraid of herself. It has happened before that she has come to consciousness in a strange room filled with broken glass, almost suffocated under a blanket plastered with her own blood. Perhaps, she thinks, it is better to die than live a monster.

However, you can grow flowers where dirt used to be, and being around other kids when Fibromyalgia and dementia have not seized her vulnerable body has helped her become more determined to live. Dark poetry is a good way to let out her demons; better than screaming and throwing herself down stairways in any case. Though she is cautious around people, she has learnt that trusting a few, to listen to her stanzas as she battles ghosts with ink can be very valuable. Someone secretive, sarcastic and scornful like herself would be ideal. Anyone too kind is a threat. That is the twisted world of Jasper Deckland.

Being abandoned by ones parents is never going to positively affect ones personality. However, Jasper lives with no regrets, because when she ran away, it was from her shadows and not from any abusive or nightmarish family. It was their fault for not coming to find her afterwards. Jasper doesn’t blame them for it, though – in their position she would be the same, who wants to care for a kid with an illness they can’t deal with who needs medicine they can’t afford? They let her suffer for 10 years, only because they couldn’t make her better. As a result, Jasper has learnt not to regret anything; perhaps them not coming to find her happened for a reason. At least they are better off without her.

History: When she was four, Jasper developed a flu-like infection that would not go away. She complained of aching muscles and random jolts of pain through her spine, but everyone told her she was just growing. But since when did growing feel like tracker jacker venom was pulsing through your veins where blood should be? For weeks at a time, Jasper couldn’t walk, see or eat. All she did was scream as the intense pain became more intense. Besides, this was District Five. What treatment could they offer her? Her parents begged peacekeepers and richer citizens alike to help their little girl, but with no avail.

For years it went on like this. She was kept from school, her parents both humiliated and terrified for the health of their daughter. Neighbours talked about her – wouldn’t it be kinder to kill her? Old women performed ancient rituals from before the dark days to cleanse her soul of the demons that possessed it. Jasper was trapped in pain and hallucinations worse than Hell itself.

And then, when she was 14, she decided that the spectres would hurt her family like they were hurting her if she stayed with them. So she ran, blindly, out of the neighbourhood of the District where the houses were, past the waste pits and into the unknown fields of the abandoned ranches. Shaking with the pain screaming round her body, Jasper curled up and awaited death. That was when she was found, and half dragged, whimpering, to Sycamore House. And now, her history is a new page waiting to be covered in poetry from her new life.

Place in group: Low thought of. She sees herself that way. These people have no afflictions, she is an embarrassment and why should they have to put up with her company? Jasper would rather be alone and thought of as dirt than recognised as high up in the Sycamore group, only to humiliate them all when the Chronic Pain Syndrome grabs control of her body. However, Jasper has a way of making friends she doesn’t want, and may soon find herself climbing the ranks of the social hierarchy of Sycamore House’s inhabitants.

Relationships:
Whoever brings her to the house at the beginning of her long page has Jasper’s trust ( hehe, I don’t know who ) And though she will not trust, she will love and accept love, too.

Plot ideas:
Jasper has a destructive tendency, so something drastic like fire or injury is inevitable with her around. Love and broken love from someone who thinks they have the ability to ‘fix’ her, or at least get through to her while she’s still herself. Perhaps, her hallucinations become her reality so much that another child starts to see them (lolwut psychic powers.)

Why you should be chosen:
Because I’m the coolest cucumber in the garden
Because if you don’t I’ll destroy your family
Because I really want to write more, and even though I have little experience this beautiful idea and the story that has evolved from it has inspired me. To be involved in something like this would mean a lot to me (ooh cheesy ) and I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it quickly, and contribute to the story in a number of (I hope!) productive ways.

Why your character should be chosen:
Jasper is not the epitome of evil, nor is she a perfect hero. She is neither totally flawed nor flawless, but she has the balance of a teenager with a real problem. Fibromyalgia affects more adults than it does children, but I have been in contact before with people who are affected by it, and know what a horrendous disease it is. I think Jasper is different from the other characters already involved in the Sycamore House plot, and would give an interesting twist to the lives of the children there. She is an orphan of sorts, though knew her parents well.

Chosen Character: Ruth, I guess :3

Plot/interaction ideas: Being shy and timid, she doesn't seem like a sociable type but she really just wants to fit in. She knows her twin is very protective of her, and even though she is grateful for it, this can sometimes get on her nerves, as she just wants to be left alone, and not have to rely on her brother for everything. Maybe there could be some conflict between the twins, even though they both mean good? I'd also love Ruth to be friends with Arwen (not just because me and Clover are good friends, what, who would even think that...) and have Ruth be a kind of support, but Arwen not really want her around because she's only 14, and pftt, what do 14 year olds know?

Character summary as you perceive them: Ruth to me is the type of girl who spends more time stuck inside of her head then in the real world. She isn't necessarily shy but has never really had the chance to get to know other people well. Even though she is only little, she has high expectations and has conflicting emotions and feelings towards the others living at Sycamore House. She usually makes the effort to interact with the other children, but then again she is often left by herself, as nobody has time to deal with such a silly little girl and couldn't care less about her. Due to being alone, she has many different interests and spends a lot of time drawing, and also sees things that other people would usually skip over and not even take the time to notice. She hopes that one day somebody will finally see her through fresh eyes, that somebody will finally view her as an equal individual who should not be neglected or disregarded for any reason, nor feel the need to abuse her, like her father did.
