There's an island hidden in the sound
Lapping currents lay your boat to ground
Fix your barb and bayonet
The curlews carve their arabesques
And sorrow fills the silence all around
Come and see...
There's a harbor lost within the reeds
A jetty caught in over-hanging trees
Among the bones of cormorants
No boot mark here nor finger prints
The rivers roll down to a soundless sea
Won't you come and see
Come and see...

“Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.”

Beyond the coast of District Four, across the cobalt waves, far from the sounds of waves crashing on the cliffs of the mainland and long after the seagulls have lost the courage to stray from civilisation, lies an island. Shrouded in mist and visible from neither fishing boats nor hovercrafts, the inhabitants of this strange isolated land remain wholly undisturbed by the dystopian society of Panem.
And this island is not like those in fishing chains across the close waters of the District. Those who have managed to find their way there have found it extraordinary difficult to get back again. In fact, many did not find a way of getting back at all...
But how is life in such a hidden place? Are the dwellers there all driven insane by lack of anyone except each other? Family bonds show tension, and love, generosity and happiness are always shadowed closely by hate, jealousy and mistrust. Magic is very much at work on The Island...
Based on William Shakespeare's "The Tempest", The Island is a District Four plot that focuses strongly on the relationships between the characters, and relies very strongly on contrasting light and dark thoughts and intentions. As a result, a little experience is necessary if you want to apply! Though I really can't ask for experts as I'm not that good myself, I'd really love to get this plot as amazing and beautiful as possible.
Prospero; Male; Adult; Open: Previously a council figure in District Four, Prospero was framed by his brother, Antonio, and high-profile young entrepreneur Alonso, for crimes he didn’t commit, and went on the run from the harsh Peacekeepers with his daughter Miranda, seeing it as an ‘exile’ from the society that knew him so well, and hated him so much. Prospero always wishes he’d been born into District Three, and is often found waist deep in circuits, lights and all manner of wires, on the more desolate side of the island. He knows the only way on and off the island – a secret harbour abandoned by scientists – and is often with his ‘servants’ the Ariels, who he trusts deeply and Caliban, who he mistreats furiously. He and Miranda have lived on The Island for years, and Prospero is hot-tempered, and still feels himself superior to many, though loves those close to him dearly. However, with the right apology, he will graciously forgive anyone who means it.[/size]
Miranda; Female; 19; Open: It’s not every day you’re shaken awake, little more than a seven year old child, by a frantic father and told to pack some belongings as you are to leave immediately. Well, Miranda was the victim of fate as she stared, confused into the panicked and wrinkle-ridden eyes of Prospero all those years ago. So protective is Prospero of his daughter that she had never laid eyes on another man, except Caliban, who is so gargoyle-esque that she has never felt attracted to him, and Gonzalo, who she was too young to think about and who has drifted out of her mind after twelve years in isolation, until the Wrecked came to the Island. And when they did, she immediately fell in love with Ferdinand. Nevertheless, she is so clueless of new faces that she is not judgemental, always tried to see the best in people and at heart is still naïve and childish. However, there are points where the feisty woman within the girl come out, and she occasionally strikes out at people who sho the wrong emotions t wrong times. While her father never lets her see his work, she is curious and adventurous, trying to find new parts of the island and always up for another attempt to educate and humanise a reluctant Caliban.
Caliban; Male; 25; Open: Caliban, the unpaid servant of Prospero and the native of the Island, often seems to be two people in one, due to his many conflicting opinions. His deceased mother, known in legend as 'The Sycorax,' an ancient tongue for 'Demon's mother', was a Captiol citizen obsessed, as many Capitol citizens are, with perfection. Everything had to be just normal before The Sycorax was happy. But that was the only thing that, in her eyes, Caliban wasn't. With six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, he was immediately shunned from Capitol society. He couold not be taken out the house and no one could come to visit. The Sycorax fretted like this for his babyhood until she decided they had to run away. And that is how they found the Island. After months hiding between District boundaries in woods and mountains, The Sycorax and Caliban made it to the Ocean, sotle a boat nd headed out to see. They were lucky to reach dry, empty land beofre their scarce supplies ran out. Making a life on the Island, with only the Ariels (who The Sycorax immediately captured up a tree for fear of them seeing her monstrous child) as a disturbance, the mpther and child lived happily. Then Prospero and Miranda were wrecked there, and Caliban's mother died abruptly. The Ariels were freed, to taunt him, and the young child, who never new company before, was enslaved by Prospero. Caliban feels that now The Sycorax is dead, he is the true heir of the island, and often feels extreme hate for Prospero and the other human invaders. However, Caliban loves Miranda with all his heart, and plays on her naïveté by making her pity him. As a result, Caliban will do as much to Ferdinand to keep him from Miranda as he will to Prospero to reclaim his Island.
The Ariels; Female & Male; 10; Open:The mischievous 'spirits' of the Island, The Ariels are the siblings responsible for causing pranks on the island and do whatever Prospero asks them as loyal servants and advisors. Young and playful, the Ariel siblings were lead away from their home by a Wanderer, who fascinated them by being outside the boundaries in the unknown. Kidnapped by this heartless stranger, the Ariels did all they could to escape. Finally getting free, they found their way to the only vehicle they encountered; a boat. Out in the open ocean, the Ariels were terrified and alone, but managed to navigate to the Island with the maps and stores they found in the fully equipped vessel. However, on meeting The Sycorax and her baby, they were imprisoned up a tree. The Ariels were rescued by Prospero, and now carry out his every wish in the hope of returning to Panem and their District. The pair find pleasure in taunting Caliban because of the freedom Prospero gives them, and frightening the Island's newcomers with flying trinkets from their District, which they make with Prospero's electrical supplies.
Antonio; Male; Adult of at least 30; Open: The stubborn Antonio’s motivations of jealousy and mischief-making often make him enemies, but that does not compel him to change. Indeed, when he was offered to perfect opportunity and cohorts with which to overthrow his brother, Prospero, and take his place on the council, he couldn’t refuse. Despite his cunning, Antonio is foolish and is a terrible liar. He may have once been able to fool the citizens of District Four, but his brother and often high figures in the Capitol who visit the District on business are not as easily lead astray. Antonio constantly involves himself in ridiculous plots for attention, spreading ideas of rebellion stealthily through District Four and, when on the island, attempting to persuade (Sebastian/Viola) to kill (his/her) brother and inherit his business. It is clear that Antonio is one man that would need an eye kept on him.
Alonso; Male; 27; Open: Alonso is the traditional elder brother of the characters, who loves Ferdinand dearly and keeps him close, partly for the reason that when they were first wrecked Alonso believed him to be dead. He gives Ferdinand his blessing in love with Miranda, who he also treasures as his own sibling. Now that he has grown up, Alonso regrets the way he treated Prospero, and every day wishes he had the courage to apologise to him a little more. Alonso’s feelings are often unpredictable, and he is afflicted with mood swings sometimes even in the middle of a conversation, if someone pries too far.
Ferdinand; Male; 19; Open: The younger brother of Sebastian and Alonso and heir to Alonso’s business, Ferdinand acts sometimes as young and naïve as Miranda. However, he likes to play the big boy, and struts around the island trying to impress Prospero, who secretly approves of Miranda’s relationship but could never show that on the outside. Ferdinand is often playing the hero, and is happy to undertake any task to prove his worth. However, this means he is savagely used by Antonio, undetected by Alonso, and Ferdinand finds himself in trouble with the others regularly.
Sebastian; Male; 24; OR Viola; Female; 24; Open: (For practicality, this character is referred to as Sebastian and ‘he’, but can be either) Sebastian, Alonso’s brother, is greedy and foolish. His desire for power almost matches that of Antonio, though he prefers to think about his own benefits, rather than helping others achieve their goals. A strong fighter, Sebastian trained as a Career while his elder brother excelled in business, and has always been able to fend for himself in violent situations. However, he is quite thick-skulled and can't spot a trick or a lie, even from someone like Antonio.
Gonzalo; Male; 26; Open: Back before the Exile of Miranda and Prospero, Gonzalo was a dear friend of Miranda, even though he was twice her age when he helped her and her father escape the violence following them in the District. Prospero took Gonzalo as a sort of young apprentice, to study him at council meetings and have a room in his large and very empty home. No one knows who Gonzalo’s father is, but they suspect he was a victor who had a brief love affair with his mother before moving on with the tour. His mother died in childbirth, so could never tell him, and Prospero rescued him from an orphanage and took him I when he went to visit to boost his public image. Gonzalo’s diversions and concern that the father and daughter had enough resources for life on the Island saved their lives. He is always kind, always with an optimistic outlook on life. Even when he finds himself on a strange island, he quickly takes on the role of breaking up arguments, and is happy to be with his old friends again. Even Caliban doesn’t mind talking to him, in fact, they get oon very well. But what about Miranda? Could something develop between them, even with Ferdinand’s on the scene?[/blockquote][/blockquote]
Things to remember: Yes, I’ve used a little poetic licence with ages and genders, but they do not affect the plot (hopefully). This is set at the end of the play, when everything has happened, but Prospero does not propose they all go home, and has not yet forgiven anyone. Instead, they remain on the Island and the bonds that happen in Shakespeare the King’s version of events will occur over time, with the way you play the characters. If you have any questions about the characters, the story or anything else at all, or you want to complain that the plot sucks or you hate me or something, shoot me a PM, comment below or read the brief plot or the list of charaters. I’m really sorry about the length of this plot, I’m really excited as this is my first plot and I wanted to make sure I got everything right.

The tides will come and go
Witnessed by no waking eye
Who rose like the wind
Though we know for sure
Amidst this fading light
We'll not go home again
Come and see
Come and see...
