“The air is still across the oil fields of District Five, the dingy smell that infests the District pulses through the senses. From this stillness rises the turn of the north wind, scooping the autumn leaves from their resting places, gently floating them across the brilliant sapphire sky. They fly away far from these busier workplaces, these more frequented streets, to a place far from the hub of Five’s Industry. At last they come to rest at an old rancher, this house and its kind are all that remains of District Five’s agricultural roots. The old rancher is silent except for the occasional creak; this is the language of aging architecture. Again the air is still, the world is silent, and the only noticeable difference between the two scenes is the presence of farming and the absence of putrid oil fumes. When from the silence there rises a scream. Like all other things this day, it begins at a low, rising in a hellish crescendo until words break forth at the peak.
‘Stay away from me. Please, I don’t want to kill you!’”
Once upon a time there lived a young boy, raised to be an ideal Capitol citizen. As you and I know, that meant that our little boy was perfectly naughty. Of course, his parents didn’t think so, but then, they had been raised as Capitol citizens too, so perhaps we can forgive them. Still, their son was proud, violent, and very spoiled. He was also a spirited patriot; proud of his country, well, I suppose more accurately, of his city. But as our boy grew up, he ran in with certain people, philosophers, do-gooders, and that sort, who slowly began to wear away at his worldview. We won’t go in to all the details here, because in all honesty, I don’t have the time to write it, and you don’t have the time to read it. In fact, I should expect you wouldn’t want to.
But the sum of it is, that by the time he was 18, our little boy, now a handsome young man, had re-examined his rather superficial life. And his conclusion was this: that he knew that something both in the Capitol and himself was horribly wrong, but that he couldn’t simply throw away everything he had learned in his childhood, and so perhaps the best thing to do would be to run away from it all (I am not saying that this was the best thing, this was only what he thought would be the best thing).
And so our young man, still very patriotic, for it is harder to change ideas than to adopt them, applied for a job as one of Panem’s Peacekeepers. Soon thereafter he was assigned to District Five, Oil. Unfortunately, this change of scenery did not turn out well for our friend. Given power, the spark of goodness that had grown in him was quenched. Until one day, he met a lonely District Five girl, and that is when a peculiar thing happened: the young fellow fell in love.
Here, I will ask you to please set aside your opinion of love or romance. Because what I’m afraid you’ll think of is something quite different from what our young friend experienced. The lovely young woman to whom he had given his heart was a balm, not a weight, upon his troubled soul. She helped him to re-examine the Capitol, Panem, and the world. And rather than demanding that he change all this for her, she demanded that he abandon it, to find his true self. The young lady brought out the best in him, the good part that had floundered in the world’s flow of demands until they met. And the two continued on for a very long time, though our young man could not marry.
Eventually though, the young lady bore our friend a young boy. And now the three lived in perfect bliss for a short time. Our young man the Peacekeeper was now as good, I suppose, as a man can be, and he was thoroughly determined to raise his son to be good also. That was when tragedy struck. The Peacekeeper’s love, the lonely young girl, died in her sleep. No one knew why. Think for a moment of someone you love oh so very much, and suppose they died. Perhaps you will understand some portion of the agony which filled the lonely, lonely Peacekeeper.
It did not take long for the Peacekeeper to do what I think any man would do. He retired with honors , money , and much grief from his Peacekeeper duties and returned with his young son to the Capitol. The boy would be raised a kind-hearted philosopher and gentlemen.
Capitol Residents:
[The Ex-Peacekeeper, Male, Age: 48-58, Open] He worked hard to retain the morals and lessons learned from his love from District Five, while also climbing the social ladder of the Capitol. He provided every privilege for his son, successfully instilling good ideas in the lad, but failing to keep out the call of the Capitol’s luxuries. A few years ago, he heard of a girl in District Five, lonely and insane, looking for a job. He immediately bought an abandoned old ranch in the District under the pretense of purchasing a summer home. He requested that the insane girl be found and installed as housekeeper. He sends her a large check to cover costs twice a year.
[The Peacekeeper’s Son, Male, Age: 19-23, Open] This young man is much like his own father at his age. He is torn between kindness and decadence, and is currently in a relationship with a flamboyant and wildly coveted Capitol starlet. In the plot, he will soon find out about the girl living alone at the old ranch. He will find it horrible to think of the girl living alone, and demand to personally take her the check. There, he will find himself falling in love with her, and like his father, be forced to make the choice between love and power.
[The Capitol Starlet, Female, Age: 18-23, Open] Have fun with this character. There isn’t much to know about her, except that she is wildly attracted to the Peacekeeper’s son. Very worldly, very loved by the Capitol’s men, she is the epitome of decadence, luxury, and fashion.
District Five Residents:
[Camilla Selden, Female, Age: 18, Me] The lonely and insane murderess from District Five, she acts as housekeeper for the old ranch. She has never met her benefactor, and doesn’t even know his name. More on Camilla can be found in her bio: thehungergamesrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=upmidchar&thread=36797&page=1
[The Philanthropist from town, Female, Age: 24-34, Open] A committed do-gooder, this woman was hired by The Ex-Peacekeeper to keep tabs on Camilla, make sure she paid bills, bring in the necessary supplies from town, etc. She is proud of her kindness, and is repulsed by Camilla.
Possible Other Characters: Other young Capitol Men as friends to the Son or admirers of the starlet. Other suggestions are appreciated!
You’ll notice that I gave an extensive history, but very little detail on character or appearance. Feel free to get creative with those. Also, this plot is kind of rough, so I’m open to all suggestions!
So...applications aren't first come first serve. And here's what I need to know:
