"I wish we lived in the Capitol. Then we could eat all we want and do what we want.Unlike this District..."
-Ginger Brown
Apple lightly walks through the District with her fourteen year-old sister,Ginger. She is holding her hand firmly,as if never to let go.She is clutching her in excitement. Not happy excitement, but the kind of excitement that when you can't have something for a long time and then suddenly its there, right in front of you.But the thing is,Apple still has a price to pay for what she wants. What she wants is food.Fresh bread from the bakery is too expensive.Even stale bread is usually out of reach, but what Apple and her family love is fruit.Fresh fruit from the orchards.Of course, they can't take fruit straight from the orchard, unless they want to be tortured. But people sell fruit.Obviously there's a fee involved. But what choice does the family have? They're certainly not alone.
Apple and Ginger reach the market, where they stare with watering mouths at the food on sale.
"What do we need,Apple?" asks Ginger, but quiet Apple shrugs and continues to stare.
"We need to spread it out equally between the six of us.And we can't live on fruit. We need variety. Some meat.Meat is awfully expensive, though.Bread is too, vegetables are okay..."
Apple rushes over to a small stall hidden in the hungry District Eleven crowds. She looks up at the bony man who runs the stall. He looks old,but must be young. The stall sells fresh vegetables.Ginger walks up to the stall and forces a smile. She looks very pretty when she smiles, she tries to smile a lot and it really spreads that glimmer of joy through District Eleven.
"What do you want for dinner,Apple?"
Apple picks up a leaf of cress and Ginger's smile widens.
"Just like our brother!"
Ginger buys some cress, just enough to feed six. Then she picks up a small portion of carrots, for the side.
"It's a tiny bit,but it's all we can afford.It's this or death.You pick,Apple."
Apple can't help but smirk at her sister, she can find the tiniest ray of light through a blacked out window.
The girls start to make their way back home to their hungry siblings and parents. But as they walk through the muddy path,Apple trips in her heavy boots and falls face-first into a puddle of mud and rainwater left from that afternoon's showers.
