The mid-winter winds snapped at Charm’s bare cheeks as he strolled down the crowded street of shops. He shuffled his shoulders to adjust inside his large coat. There was no snow, thankfully, then again District One didn’t particularly see much snow as it was… still though, it was cold, and too cold for Charm’s taste. Usually he would be much warmer as Saber would be close at hand to have an arm around him. Today however, Charm was left to fend the cold alone. Saber was off at some special career retreat from another training academy for the weekend. Usually Charm would have gone too, but his parents had set him up to have his hair bleached and his eyes lightened… or something ridiculous of that sort for this weekend. They had him so frequently under scrutiny and modification that it was hard to keep up with what they even had him doing anymore.
Charm sighed, his breath visible in the cold air. He hated shopping by himself. With everyone on the retreat though, he didn’t have much choice… and shopping alone was still better than shopping with his mother. With the Victory Tour so close at hand and another Games around the corner, his parents’ doting had gotten significantly worse in recent weeks. In fact, the Victory tour was the very reason he had to be out shopping now in this cold. His mother demanded he purchase a few new outfits for the occasion. Of course, the celebrations wouldn’t be as grand as if Reyes Moreno would have won, but career victors from Two and Four were still highly celebrated in One as well. Then again, Julian Bryze’s mother, Pashmina Bryze, was from One, so perhaps the festivities would still be extra lively… regardless, he needed more new clothes for the occasion.
After selecting a lavender based ensemble, the wealthy boy headed back down the main shopping strip to his mother’s favorite jeweler. She always took him there for special occasions and had specifically instructed him to go there for his accessory needs today. No outfit in District One was complete without a touch of glamour… unless of course you were one of the few citizens who couldn’t afford luxuries—the Lazulis were not among them.
As Charm entered the jewelers, he couldn’t help but close his eyes and smile with comfort as the warmth of the store sunk over him. It was such a nice contrast to the bitter weather outside. He smiled brightly at the attendant who took his coat, always charming and congenial to even those who served him. It was one of his greatest weapons.
He pushed up the sleeves of his bright cobalt sweater as he walked further into the store. The shade made his brilliant blue eyes pop and dazzle just like the gemstones with which he shared a name. Slowly, he began making his way around the display cases, searching for something to go with his Victory Tour outfit. There were just so many accessories that glimmered and glistened to catch his eye, it was hard to even begin selecting today's purchases. Charm had to admit, despite how much he hated being his parent’s china doll, he couldn’t help but be enamored with the jewels that came with the package.
